Speech problems

Hello I was wondering of ANYONE could help..

My 3 year old has always has a slight lisp and a stutter since he started saying words and noises at about the age of 1, since then I have been told countless times that its a 'phase' he will grow out of. But more recently I've been more concerned so I went to our GP where he has been referred to a speech therapist.

I have absolutely no idea what to expect especially as he is extremely shy and getting him to talk to any 'grown up' is a challenge and takes time let alone a stranger.

thanks to anyone that can help!

They assess where if there is an age-appropriate speech defect by asking child to say various words. Your child can say the words to you if he's shy, he won't be in there alone (usually). They are usually very good at getting children to play.

If they decide there is a problem, they start with listening skills, eventually after many sessions building up to expressive speech. They will look for a structural/habit gone wrong with how the mouth shapes itself, too, in case of something like a lisp.

The format is often taking turns listening or speaking, during a game with an instant reward (where something explodes or falls apart suddenly at the end). Lots of homework for you!
