Help! Any braces experts out there?

Dd got new braces today. We are new to orthodontics - I never had a brace and neither did DH. She's got those train track style ones to treat overcrowding. She's literally just got home and had a glass of water and a lump of plastic stuff has fallen out of her mouth into the glass.

DH was with her at the appointment and says the plastic stuff was put on her teeth to stop her biting down too hard and breaking her braces. So it's not that wax stuff you put on to stop irritation, it's something that was supposed to stay in her mouth for a while and it hasn't. She's still got a lump on one of her molars so this seems to have fallen off the molar on the other side of her mouth.

Orthodontist is now closed for the weekend and I don't know who to ask - does anyone know if we should be panicking, or just trying to get her back in to the dentist sometime next week. We're off on holiday in 10 days time so I don't want to leave it too long.

Can anyone reassure me?

erm, can't really reassure you as not sure what the plastic thing is??? My DS1 has similar braces but he didn't have anything plastic put on his teeth to stop him biting down too hard.
However.... we have had a few minor "dramas" with his braces (nearly 2 years in now!) and always at a weekend. Worried sick the first time but to be honest, I think (but I don't know for definite) that a couple of extra days over the weekend won't make much difference, she is going to be eating food carefully the next few days anyhow until she gets used to the braces.
sorry, hope this reassures you in some way!

Relax, just call the orthodontist on Monday. A few days won't make any difference at all. Could it be wash to prevent them rubbing? If it was to stop her biting too hard then it may just be a bit of excess that doesn't matter anyway.

Disclaimer: I'm just a general dentist, not an orthodontist. There is one on here at least.

What MrsMorton said (DS gets his traintracks off in 2 weeks, yay!!). Tell her to chew carefully in meantime, her mouth is probably very sore tonite anyway and she'll only want soup or similar.
