DD is 4. Has been a bit pale beneath her suntan today but otherwise seemed fine. She complained about a sore tummy in the car, she often does that and is fine when outside, but an hour later is still saying its sore.

Have taken her temp - couple of times in the last hour or so and it's gone from 38.3 to 38.9. Have given Calpol. How fast should I be looking for this to reduce her temp?

Thanks in advance

It usually takes an hour to work on my dc even though its advertised as working sooner, tbh nurofen does a better job.

MrsMoosickle · 28/07/2013 20:49

Thanks for the reply. It went down after about an hour, but has zoomed back up to 38.9 again. She seems okay despite it though.

Have just given her Nurofen now though too.

Thanks again, I worry so much and end up watching like a hawk for every little symptom.

Well I worry too but I have a little list in my head to think through and reassure myself or make sure I'm acting when I need to iyswim?

So.....

Breathing ok? No tugging in under ribs or at trachea
No severe pain
Temp not 39.5+ and not coming down with calpol
No stiff neck
No unbalancing rash
Not lethargic and floppy
Drinking and weeing ok

If all that's ok I usually watch and wait unless its something obvious eg: I always know when ds has an ear infection and he always needs antibiotics.

BeaWheesht · 28/07/2013 23:49

Non blanching not unbalancing

There seem to be more viruses around this summer than usual (speaking as someone who works somewhere we test for them!). If she is well in herself and the temperature is coming down with calpol, the likelihood is it is one of these viral bugs. If you're worried in any way, if she isn't herself or if the temperature and tummy ache don't settle with calpol then get her checked over by a doctor, any doctor should be happy to see a small child at short notice even if all that is needed is reassurance that you're doing the right thing!

MrsMoosickle · 29/07/2013 00:27

Thanks so much for your reply, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

She has finally fallen asleep having just had some calpol on my 2 hourly alternate routine, temp came win best with the Nurofen to under 38 but was creeping back up to 38.1 before the calpol.

Drinking well, did a wee and ate an ice lolly, sore tummy seemed ok, not mentioned anyway. It's such such a worry when there is no obvious thing wrong and I will be on high alert ALL night.

Thanks again everyone.

Temp came down best, not win!

Hope she's feeling better this morning. Be careful with the meds 2 hourly that you don't end up running out of doses to give within the 24 hr window iyswim

So followed the night from hell! Raging temperature again, sick at 3am after ibuprofen and generally unsettled until 6ish. Went to GP this morning and seems like DD has tonsillitis.

10 day course of penicillin prescribed, and seems a bit better in the last couple of hours.

Thanks again, appreciate the response.

Aww, tonsillitis is miserable. DD's recently had it and developed scarlet fever on top of it. Once the penicillin had kicked in, she was like a different child.

As another poster said, be careful with alternate dosing. It's not actually recommended unless advised by a health professional (it is perfectly safe though) but 2 hourly doses may be okay for the calpol side of things but it's slightly too much ibuprofen iirc. It should be 6 hourly (so 3 hourly if alternating) and you need to space it over the 24hrs so you aren't reaching the maximum dose before time.

MrsMoosickle · 29/07/2013 19:54

It's a good point. I worried about the ibuprofen, so thanks for the advice.
