Help! I just gave my baby a nurofen suppository by mouth...

...didnt read the packet, and fed my 9mo DD the suppository. Do i need to panic? Didn't even know such things existed, we got it on prescription from our doctor as my DD has fever. So far she seems ok...

You aren't the only oen, but she'll probably need checking out. They have a different formulation than oral medications.

How on earth would you get a 9mo to swallow a suppository!!! (Or any tablet for that matter).

Second thought - It might be worth checking the packaging.

My little sister was given these years ago, and the packaging has a warning about not taking them by mouth, and an emergency number to dial. It is pretty old, though. Check yours?

I contacted the adviceline, and got a reply from the doctor there. Apparently no big problem, but maybe some tummy troubles due to the fat in the suppository.

If you are wondering how I could be quite that stupid, easy really. We live in Germany, and even after many years here i still have some vocab black holes. "suppository" was one of them- I thought they were caplets or something. Even when they looked a bit funny, I decided they were maybe meltlets and stuffed one in DDs mouth. She eats everything right now (fluff, sand, stones, grass) so the suppository was no obstacle. Later I read the whole patient info leaflet, and found out I had mistranslated...

Aahh these things happen especially if it's not your first language. One day you'll have a right old giggle about it. Fingers crossed that it doesn't affect DD's tummy.

She's been fine. No tummy trouble at all. Guess all that training eating grass/paper/whatever else she finds before I fish it out of her mouth has helped. She's still ill with the same coldy fluey thing, but I've retreated in shame back to imported Calpol, which is doing the trick nicely. When I'm feeling brave/when I run out of Calpol I will try the Nurofen suppository properly. Thanks to all who made me feel slightly less pathetic. My German mummy friends have had a good giggle at my expense!
