6 year old woken with one very swollen eye. Help me stop her panicking

She has not bumped it, it does not hurt or itch but her eyelid is hugely puffed up and she can hardly open it. She is very upset by it and worried. Any ideas what it might be?

Could it be an allergic reaction? Has she been rubbing it in her sleep?

FacebookWanker · 14/07/2013 08:26

It could be conjunctivitis. I'm just getting over it and my eye was really swollen when I woke. Call Seldoc (?) or NHS direct and they should be able to help you out. I hope it's nothing too serious.

Hay fever?
Dehydration?
I had this once on holiday, too much sun and not enough water.
Give her an anti-histamine and plenty fluid and have another look in an hour or two.

It could be a mozzy bite, I had one on my eye once, swelled up like I had been in a fight.

Bathe it in cooled salt water then put a cold compress on it for a bit.

If you have piriton/children's antihistamines you could give her a dose.

Artijoke · 14/07/2013 08:29

I thought about hay fever but would it not itch? It's not itchy at all. It's also not weepy, would conjunctivitis be weepy?

Second mozzie bit and piriton. Dd gets this if she is bitten

FacebookWanker · 14/07/2013 08:30

Mine was weepy on most days (had it fir two weeks) but not always...

FacebookWanker · 14/07/2013 08:42

Lots of conditions have similar symptoms so I would get it checked out first. See if the swelling goes down. My eyes were incredibly itchy before the weeping started, so possibly it's not conjunctivitis...

CMOTDibbler · 14/07/2013 08:45

DS and I have both had really puffy eyes in the morning this hayfever season. Antihistamines have sorted it for both of us, so I'd give her piriton today and look in the pharmacy later for allergy eye drops (and ask the pharmacist for advice) and if it hasn't gone down tomorrow, pop to the gp.

ChablisLover · 14/07/2013 08:47

An infection. Ds had a swollen eyelid and it was cellullousis(sp??)

Course of antibiotics cleared it up

Go to the ooh centre and get her checked out

Souper · 14/07/2013 08:49

If it is just one eye and no bump etc you should see a doctor today. It could be periorbital cellulitis which definitely needs antibiotics. Don't leave it to tomorrow.

Mistyshore · 14/07/2013 08:53

If piriton doesn't do anything and it's badly swollen get her to the out of hours.

Ds had a similar sudden dramatic swelling and it turned out to be serious and needed IV antibiotics. Ds had peri orbital cellulitis which is really nasty if not treated. I don't want to panic you though so hope the piriton works.

coffeewineandchocolate · 14/07/2013 09:04

sty? ingrown hair? is it painful at all. I would put a child flannel on it and call the out of hours dr...

CaptainJamesTKirk · 14/07/2013 09:05

Has she been bitten... Mosquito bite perhaps?

jajawunderbar · 14/07/2013 09:13

Agree with mistyshore - DD's friend also had this, was in need of iv antibiotics and was admitted to pediatrics so I would def go down ooh route / pop her to a&e.

Artijoke · 14/07/2013 09:40

Oh gosh, just googled periorbital cellulitis and it does match the symptoms and photos. DH going to take her to the opticians which opens at 10.30 and if necessary we can go to A&E. we have an eight week old too so I will try and stop her touching him until we know the cause.

How did you get on OP?

Artijoke · 14/07/2013 11:25

Optician was closed (despite misleading website with Sun opening times, grrr). Pharmacist said she needs checking out. We would be on our way to out of hours but my 93 year old grandmother-in-law thinks the heat will kill her so I'm currently in a queue trying to buy a large fan which I will drive across town to hers before going to paediatric A&E. what a way to spend a lovely summers day!
