Hi,

I am in panic. 2+ y.o. has been coughing and just started throwing out each time something solid gets in his mouth. It's been going for 4 days now and I am really worried. He's been going apple juice and the occasional 'Peppa' Yogurt. Temperature is going up and down all the time and he sleeps most of the day (and night).

Have you had a similar issue? What to do?

Going to the GP is a pain as each time they react as we shouldn't be there - didn't even try to check his throat yesterday. Just stated 'many people suffered the heat, keep him cool, tepid water and drinks'.

Thanks!

It's nerve wracking but they can exist on almost nothing at that age for a while.

Try home made banana milkshake or smoothies which are more like food. Or ice cream (lots of calories) and then a drink of milk with some vitamin drops in.

The most important thing is to keep him drinking. Dehydration is dangerous, and sleepiness can be a sign. Once he's over the bug and when the weather cools down, he'll pick up.

I think a 2 year old with a cough and who can't eat should be taken to the gp again.
Try not to worry too much about food, but do get I'm to drunk plenty.
I dint see how a cough is anything to do with the heat?

Each time I go to the GP its all the same - have you been to the Pharmacy, have you been giving Calpol, its nothing. They make me feel this is the wrong place to be. I try to avoid it as much as possible, but high temperature, coughing and choking after each bite (getting worse) of solid food is freaking. I have no idea how someone who didn't even look at his throat can say it is the heat. Thank you. I'll be more assertive tomorrow morning.

He needs to be checked properly, eg throat, lungs, ears, temp, SATS (oxygen level in blood with little cloth peg like device on finger).

The heat doesn't cause coughing or fever. Can he have swallowed a foreign object?
Push with your thumb on his nail (does't matter which one) and then whilst pushing move your thumb to the tip of his nail so his nail becomes white, then let go and within two seconds his nail should be pink again. Any slower indicates too little oxygen. You can google it: capillary refill test

How does his temperature fluctuate?

It would worry me if he sleeps a lot more than normal. How is his breathing? You can check his breathing rate if it looks laboured.
