Asthma - when is a cough just a cough?

Hello,

My 3yo son recently had an asthma diagnosis. He has had some bad wheezy episodes after a horrid virus but has been really well recently and staying healthy with just a puff of the brown reliever every morning.

The last few nights he has been awake with a horrid dry sounding cough and has been a bit wheezy so have given him the blue inhaler which helped.

But today he just keeps coughing and it does sound dry but I don't think he is wheezing and he is sneezing too, so is this just a cough or is it asthma?

Just feel like I really don't understand when to give inhalers and stuff. Any advice very gratefully received!

Could he have hayfever too? Perhaps try some antihistamine, my DS is asthmatic and really struggling with hayfever at the moment (He is also 3)

DS doesn't always wheeze when his asthma is bad. Does giving him inahler help with the cough?

If your not sure do you have an asthma nurse you can contact for advice at your practise?

It could be hayfever as he has a tons of allergies (cats, dairy, eggs, sesame, nuts) and he is looking a bit allergic today (dark circles under eyes, bit of a rash on face).

No asthma nurse appt yet as the doctor is still keeping an eye on him.

He is still coughing away and just not sure which drugs, if any to give! I hate dithering but don't want to give him drugs needlessly.

Just wish I could ask him about it but he is a total drama queen and any sign I was worried would start asking for medicine in a very weak and dramatic voice!

I would be tempted to give some ventolin, which should work very quickly and won't do any harm and then if that doesn't help give him some antihistamine.

Hope he is feeling better soon

Give him his blue inhaler every 4 hours or so and see if it helps. Also give him piriton or similar.

Ds (6) has asthma - he rarely wheezes but always coughs
