Summer eczema flare up

Hi everyone. Does anyone have any tips for dealing with eczema in the summer?
My DD is 7mo & has pretty bad eczema. She's been fine for months and months but now the weather has changed it's awful again.
Her head, face and neck are covered in bumps and I'm sure it's bothering her as she slept really badly last night.
I was fully expecting a flare up when the weather changed but I'm just wondering if I should change our normal routine.
I always wash/bath her in the Oilatum bath formula and use the Oilatum cream everywhere except her face and her bum. I wash her hands & face after every meal and only use water wipes on her.
I'd be grateful for any tips.
Thanks everyone. x

hi there,

my dd2 (now aged 5) has this.

initially a significant 48hr application (so two nights in a row) of her steriod followed by her usual moisturiser would bring it under control, and then carrying on as normal with bath/bed moisturising routines settled it down.

for the last couple of years though, she's also been on an antihistamine. this she only has one dose per day, and i only give it to her when the weather gets like this until it cools down and she's back to normal again.

significantly I've realised recently that she reacts to suncreams -even 'sunsense', an expensive one i bought specifically at the pharmacy because it's for sensitive skin. obviously this may not be the case for your dd, but perhaps be careful what suncreams (if any?) you put on her.

Thank you. I'm going to try to get her checked tomorrow. I understand there's a suncream you can get on prescription.

yes I think that is the one though that I ended up buying for some reason. Not sure why - might be that I couldn't get it on prescription here anyway. Hope it works for your dd.
Is she on a steriod cream/ointment? I know there's a reluctance to prescribe /use them but IME, using it properly (i.e. enough to make a difference, rather than being over-sparing...) for short bursts makes a huge difference.

Hi
Ds1 (now 8yrs) has had eczema since was a baby and is recently going through another flare up Sad however when it comes to suncream a pharmacist told me that very high spf (eg 50)could aggrevate the eczema due to to chemicals in it - she suggested a lower spf (25/30) and apply more often. Tried this and we noticed a definite improvement.

Also agree with showme about steroid cream - used properly they can make all the difference.

I agree with the steroid creams but I think before you go down that line you should look at what your child's skin is exposed to.

Eczema is often caused by something irritating the skin, in this case it may be the sun or sweating because it's hotter at night. The best way to treat it is with moisturiser. Unfortunately, many moisturisers contain irritants which can actually make the skin worse.

I'd say the best thing to do is use a moisturiser with no irritants, this way you can help sooth the eczema but won't expose it further.

I know this is a bit of a plug, but my site www.skinsalve.co.uk sells moisturiser that contains no known irritants.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to give me a shout.

James
