Hand, foot and mouth - tips to soothe mouth?

DS2 (20mths) has hand, foot and mouth. Very sore mouth, he is calpol and nurofen dosed up. Tried cold foods etc.

Any other tips? His mouth is so so sore. No sleep here again tonight, is a dummy lover, but his mouth is so sore he won't have it in. Sad

Poor thing. No suggestions, I'm afraid, as we found a similar thing when ds1 had it. He ate nothing but cold custard for 5 days. Hmm

He has eaten a yogurt and a small mountain of cheese Hmm. He is so miserable (at night), sleeping for now but for how long is anyone's guess.

Lots and lots of cold icecream. Anything really cold that will soothe his little mouth. Did I mention icecream? Worked for us. Grin

If only he liked ice-cream, honestly think he's one of the only children I know that hates the stuff. He might well change his mind now though! Thanks, will try it again.

Can adults get it? I have a very sore throat and tongue

Not much help for tonight, but the doctor gave my little one a spray to numb his mouth - helped massively.

Thanks countingdown - was debating taking him to doctors

Ice cream was the only thing my DS would tolerate, he wasn't taking any fluids or other food and I had to distract him and practically force feed him ice cream as I was so worried about him becoming dehydrated.

Worth trying even if your son hasn't liked it before.

Adults can get it, sorry to say. My mum caught it from my DS and was really poorly for a few days.

You say he likes yogurt? Would he eat a yogurt that you had frozen - if it looks the same from the outside you may have a bit of luck with it.

Thanks all. A bit brighter today, frozen bananas was a tip from my friend that helped. Also my mum suggested honey?

Hoping things are on the up.

Drinking with a straw involves less mouth movements so may be an option. Experiment with very cold iced water or body temp fluids to see which is better. Bland foods (cheese Shock)!!

Horrible ,yucky thing... In our case anything really bland with ice cubes , and cubes of yoghut stuck on wooden skewers went down well. I even put strawberreis and rasps through a sieve to get a puree and no pips.

I suppose if you wanted to get rid of the dummy it's the ideal opportunity. To maybe a silver lining in the middle of a storm lol
