My dd who is 4 has had loose stools since friday. She has never had an accident since potty training and she accidently went in her pjs the other night. she was distraught. she was sleeping at the time and only woke up after she'd done it, screaming. over the weekend she kept having loose stools but she was absolutely fine other than that so i just put it down to her eating something dodgy or maybe picking up a bug. However, since yesterday afternoon she has gotten a lot worse. She pood in her knickers again last night and it was literally just water, everything she eats and drinks goes through her. Again, fine in herself just the diarrhea. I made an appt with the doctor this morning who said that they will send away a stool sample if i can get one next time she goes. So I got her to do it in the potty. It was disgusting, it was just mucus, the whole thing, dark brown in colour... I took the sample and will be taking it to the doctors tomorrow. She has just had another accident.... She feels a bit hot and her temp is 38, but she hasnt had a temp all weekend. I can tell she is starting to feel drained now as she asked to go to bed and is looking tired. I'm really concerned about this as its been going on for 5 days. She isnt a good eater as it is, and everything is going through her.. The doctor sai there is nothing I can give her to stop it, but now she has a slight temperature, I dont know whether to take her back tomorrow. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this, where it has lasted so long, diarrhea with no other symptoms? She doesnt feel sick, she only has pains in her tummy when she is about to go... i hope she's ok :( xxxx

Get her some diaorylite from the chemist.
It's rehydration powder in various flavours. It's not unpleasant.
The gp should have told you this.
He sounds rubbish.
If she goes worse get her to the ooh...she may need IV fluids.
Best of luck x

My DS has just had exactly this :( He's 3yo and had diarrhea from last Tues evening until Saturday, with no other symptoms. I fed him toast, bananas, rice cakes, scrambled egg and bread sticks over the weekend and he's now back to normal. I tried to get him to drink dioralyte but he was not keen.
I was going to take him to the GP yesterday but it had cleared up by then.
I hope your DD is better soon

My DD had diarrhoea for two weeks last year and I also thought it was a bug. She was fine in herself but liquid was constantly running out of her bottom. We couldn't go anywhere and I ended up putting sanitary pads in her knickers. Doctor wasn't concerned as she was eating and drinking and still weeing so she wasn't dehydrated. It eventually stopped. Fast forward 18months and she has an impacted bowel and has had poo issues since then so I am convinced that the diarrhoea back then was her previously built up poo being expelled from her bowel. Does your daughter get constipated at all? As we don't often think diarrhoea and constipation are linked but they often are. Just thought I would share my experience but in general terms with diarrhoea you should always make sure she has plenty of fluid.

mummyof2kidsx · 02/07/2013 19:50

The doctor looked in her throat today and said she is not dehydrated. I'm going to get some dioralyte tomorrow. She is still drinking, but all she had was water through the night last night and it came out first thing this morning. between the ages of 1 and 2 she was constantly on lactulose and a high dose of it too. everything settled when she was about 2 though and she has been fine since... im just worried it's something serious, and wondering when i should go back to the doctor...just gonna keep an eye on her temp for the next few hours and through the night..

Oh you must be so worried. Make sure she drinks plenty of water and try to get her to eat a v plain snack in the morning. If she's worse tomorrow or her temp hasn't gone down then get on to the GP again and take her back to check again that she's not dehydrated. I would hope your GP would be happy to keep checking her every day if necessary.
Has she gone to sleep okay?

mummyof2kidsx · 02/07/2013 23:33

She went to sleep ok but she woke about an hour ago and she had an accident in her bed and went into the toilet and it was everywhere. The whole bathroom was covered in it.... i cleaned her down as best i could but she was so tired i just put her back to bed. Hopefully she should will b ok till the morning.. :(

still no better! it will be 7 days tomorrow! iv had to put a nappy on her! feel so sorry for her :( should i take her back to the doctors in the morning? or should i just wait for the results of the stool sample? i dont now if the doctor wil be able to do anything as the other day they said there is nothing we can do unless shes dehydrated... she cant go on much longer like this though, its horrific.. maybe i should take her to a&e in the morning instead of the doctors? at least then i might get to find out what it is much quicker? i'm really worried about this... :(

DD pooed every 2 hours for 21 days - morning & night - in Feb. GP took samples but we ended up in A&E when her temp was 39.6 degrees.

Turned out to be adenovirus. I had never heard of it!

reddaisy · 03/07/2013 21:01

If she has been on lactulose before then I would say there is a good chance that it's bowel related rather than a virus. Have a look at some of the impact ion threads on here as they will be far more help than me with my limited knowledge.

mummyof2kidsx · 03/07/2013 21:23

stargirl - do you remember how long you were waiting for the results of the stool sample?

i'll have a read up about it. i'm just confused about it though, the way it was so sudden?

Poor little thing.Sad

DS1 had campylobacter when he was 12. He had diarrhoea for about 2 weeks IIRC, it was awful. Everything he ate or drank went straight through him. He had to have anti-biotics to clear it up, we think he caught it from school. We had to wait about 3 or 4 days for the stool sample to show up what he had before he could start the treatment.

I would phone the GP in the morning to see if the py have heard back, or maybe they could chase it up. I hope she is better soon.Smile

stargirl1701 · 03/07/2013 21:39

DD was ill for 7 days before we saw the GP. We saw the GP on the Monday, handed in the sample on the Tuesday and attended A&E on the Saturday. The doctors were able to access the results from A&E. So, I guess 3/4 days.

Badvoc · 04/07/2013 07:29

I would be taking her back tbh.

mummyof2kidsx · 04/07/2013 07:33

mummyof2kidsx · 05/07/2013 07:11

OP posts:
mummyof2kidsx · 05/07/2013 12:54

Badvoc · 05/07/2013 13:09

Oh poor thing! :(
Glad she has some meds now.

reddaisy · 05/07/2013 19:48

Hope she feels better soon. Don't rule out impaction as I wish I had known DD was impacted sooner than I did,

mummyof2kidsx · 05/07/2013 20:40

me too, she has just had more diarrhea about an hour ago but i think it's getting better as only been the once today. i will keep an eye on it though red daisy, thanks for your advice. does anyone know if with croup, the doctor would be able to hear anything on her chest? xx

OP posts:
reddaisy · 05/07/2013 20:55

I don't know anything about croup unfortunately. Hope she is bit better in the morning

Badvoc · 05/07/2013 21:12

Hi op
Did they check her sats?
My ds2 had croup quite badly in April and needed oral steriods in a and e.
Has she had those?
I would also be concerned that she still has diahorea too.
Sometimes a cool environment helps croup...make sure you keeps the windows open tonight.

mummyof2kidsx · 06/07/2013 07:49

the doctosr did check her stats, but he said if her breathing gets anymore laboured then to take her to a&e. she slept in my bed last night and her cough was quite bad, it's like she gets phlegm caught in her throat and she cant get it up like we do so she struggles to get her breath for a few seconds. to be honest, yesterday the cough wasn't bad at all she coughed like 5 times the whole day, it was just her breathing, but through the night she was coughing and has been this morning. the doctor said sometimes they need steroids. he wasnt sure whether it is croup or a chest infection, maybe related to the diarrhea. going to see how she is this morning.

from thursday 10am approx to friday 1pm, she didnt go to the toilet and i thought she was constipated... she then did a poo and i didnt see it as i was in the bath, but my dh said it wasn't too bad, pretty solid, but then when she went again at about 6.30 pm it was diarrhea again! xxx
