Did you take / do take medication in pregnancy?

What were they?

Do you think they have caused any problems for your child?

Thirty weeks pregnant and have taken panadol for very heavy cold/aches early on. Only had two does of two as would have preferred not to have taken anything.

Reenypip · 02/07/2013 15:00

In my pregnancy I had to continue taking fentanyl, morphine, lanszoperzole, cyclazine, domperidone, salbutamol, symbicort, and a long list of bowel medications - movicle, lactolose, magnesium, suppotries, enenmas, etc.

My 2 year old boy had mild withdrawal effects after birth.
My now 7 week old daughter had mild withdrawal effects after birth. Neither needed treatment.

My 7 week daughter had her first seizure at 4 weeks old and another 2 seizures at 5 weeks old.
No reason has been found at the moment for this.
Part of me thinks it might be the medication I was on. There are all sorts of things going on in my head including is it epilepsy etc.

I took my normal immunosuppresant drug for severe psoriasis throughout my pregnancy although not in the first trimester.

It wasn't really recommended and they hoped my skin would settle in pregnancy but if anything it was much worse. I had lots of growth scans throughout but ds has been fine so far and now he is nearly 4.

PearlyWhites · 02/07/2013 15:16

Yes oral morphine and fentanyl patch and codeine( all prescribed!) thankfully no withdrawal or side affects I was also given the ok to breastfeed.

PearlyWhites · 02/07/2013 15:17

Forgot to add my babies were low birth weight

valiumredhead · 02/07/2013 15:19

I took-
Hay fever meds
Lots of Rennies for indigestion
16 beta blockers a DAY for bp as I had pre eclampsia.

According to hospital very few meds cross the placenta but they like to put a blanket ban on most things.

No I don't think anything I took affected my baby.

colleysmill · 02/07/2013 15:21

That's quite interesting pearly although I took my drugs throughout I was told no to breast feeding. Guess it depends how it passes through the placenta and then differently through milk?

Leviticus · 02/07/2013 15:25

Two or three different anti sickness meds, antibiotics, paracetamol and steroid creams for eczema. No problems at all.

Weegiemum · 02/07/2013 15:25

I took literally litres of Gaviscon.

With dc 2 and 3 I was on sertraline (antidepressant) throughout, also bf all 3 dc on it.

With dc2 I had intermittent kidney stones, and dc3 constant stones. Only treatment in pg is morphine (can't have anti-inflammatories). A lovely pain control anaesthetist came to see me while in hospital in agony (believe me, unmediated childbirth didn't hurt this much!!) and explained that the stress hormones released by the pain are worse for baby than a dose of morphine that your body will use up (if injected above the waist) before most of it reaches the placenta.

I spent most of the rest of the time in relative comfort.

Weegiemum · 02/07/2013 15:26

Pearly and colleysmill I also bf on im morphine, with dd2 for 2 years. No bad effects.

sweetiepie1979 · 02/07/2013 15:30

I took codeine and dimazapan during this pregnancy for a prolapse disc. I took it from about 8-14 weeks. I'm now 25 weeks. I remember the awful pain I really felt I needed the pain relief I couldn't move an inch off the floor even with pain relief. But I'm worried about my baby.

minniemagoo · 02/07/2013 15:37

I took various codeine meds all through my 3, when hospitalized I was on morphine or pethadine.
All 3 born 3 weeks early by cs. All 3 had mild grunting but fine after 24hrs. All healthy now aged 9, 6 and 4.

PearlyWhites · 02/07/2013 16:04

Colley I had to fight to breastfeed my consultant was very supportive and gave lots of info to the infant feeding time who initially told me I could not breastfeed. I could not breastfeed whilst taking codeine though.

colleysmill · 02/07/2013 16:32

Mine only agreed to me trying to bf if I came off mine 2 weeks before the due date but ds was 2 weeks late so I was in a mess by the time he arrived. And after all that it was a disaster, he really wasn't latching right and nearly got tube fed so he only had a bit of expressed milk before I was back on the meds and on a bottle using formula.

Sorry bit of an aside but I find other peoples experiences quite interesting!

5madthings · 02/07/2013 16:35

Antihistemiens, a course of steroids for eczema, inhalers for asthma, citalopram in one pregnancy, antibiotics and pain killers for SPD.

Mum may be more but I can't remember, varied in each pregnancy.

My five are fine, dd had to be monitered for 24hrs after birth to check for withdrawal symptoms but she was fine, that was becaiue of citralpram.

5madthings · 02/07/2013 16:36

Oh I bed and had mixed advice open consultant was horrified that I was and wanted to call social services...the midwives and trhr pharmacist and the bfn drug line said it was fine tho.

BeaWheesht · 02/07/2013 19:01

Antibiotics for various UTIs and paracetamol a couple of times.

fledtoscotland · 03/07/2013 07:39

When pregnant with DS1 I had a general anaesthetic at 9+3, morphine, diclofenac, cocodamol, and then progesterone suppositories. Frequent growth scans and he arrived at 40+5 healthy and well.

DS2 - had cyclizine and ranitidine from about 25 wks due to horrendous heartburn and nausea/vomiting. He was born by ECS at 39+1 and has noisy breathing - observed in PICU where they found a ventricular septal defect.

Reenypip · 03/07/2013 09:33

I was told I could breast feed on morphine and fentanyl too. They said it would probably help especially in the initial stages after birth to reduce any withdrawal in baby.
They did say baby might be sleepier than usual if breast feeding and taking these meds and just to keep eye out for any effects in baby as a caution.

Did anyone watch the programme on Monday called pills and pregnancy?
It was mainly on about one specific epilepsy drug and an antidepressant.

I stopped pre gablin in my first pregnancy after I found out I was pregnant which was at 7w.

I took codiene until I was about 36 weeks for chronic pain. I was told side effects could be withdrawal or breathing difficulties - I saw a paediatrician who arranged for paed resuscitate team to be on alert when I came in.bi had acupuncture when I was pregnant and cut down my dosage - I was on 30mg 4 times a day, I managed to cut down to 15mg twice a day when I was at work then stopped when I went on Mat leave. No signs of withdrawal or breathing problems when she was born but interesting what you said Pearly, I was told I could breast feed on the codiene. I hadn't taken any but took some when DD was 6 days old and she had an apnoea episode which resulted in us going to A&E. she was fine and I was told it was coincidence but I won't take it again while BF!

happypotamus · 15/07/2013 16:54

Which anti-convulsant was featured in the programme? A quick google only mentioned anti-depressants in relation to the programme.
I took an anti-convulsant through pregnancy. I was told that, on balance, it would be safer for me to keep taking it than to risk harming the baby while having seizures. I also breastfeed and take it. DD is 2 and healthy. If she had been unwell, I don't suppose I would ever know if it was because of the drugs or just one of those things.

Jenlfc05 · 14/04/2024 22:45

I am on Morphine sulfate so worried that the doctors will take me off it , I haven't took anything else because its the only thing that works . I haven't been doctors yet told them I am pregnant I am now in 2nd stage and had no scans done with NHS because of this issue, had scans done with private said the baby is fine , has anyone been took off morphine?

Hemakesmesmile2 · 14/04/2024 23:00

I didn’t take a single medication during my pregnancy (I found out mega early so stopped my antidepressants straight away) I had bad acid reflux and absolutely horrific pelvic girdle pain to the point I could barely move and was suicidal. But I wouldn’t take anything so as not to affect my baby. My son has autism and learning difficulties. Just wanted to share because I know I’d be convinced I’d caused them both if I’d taken medication. We’re all just try to do our best 🥰
