He's always had dry skin (so have I) - and when he was younger I used to be a bit (not hugely Blush) better at putting diprobase or similar on his face, arms and legs. He's now 11 and its really bad at the moment. I think we need to have a concerted attempt to address it.
But what cream really really works? Thanks!

Udderly smooth is very good

Mabelface · 01/07/2013 18:44

I wash with aqueous cream and nothing else and I'll also use doublebase if I still feel dry. He can get into the habit of doing it himself now.

I know the stuff poltergeist means - it was developed by NHS, and they're now selling it commercially. I think it's maybe called Sunflower or something.... I'll look for a link.

Aveeno is very good, and they often do a 3 for 2 in Boots

My ds has really dry skin, it seems to come in phases, but when it's bad it is literally peeling off him like a snake's skin (ew).

Someone recommended using pure coconut oil which we tried and tbh it was absolutely fantastic. Creamed it on last thing at night, he went to sleep smelling like a coconut macaroon :o and within a really short time it had cleared up.

We now use it whenever it's looking a bit dry, and we've not had a problem with it since.

LesAnimaux · 01/07/2013 19:03

we use this in our house

beautifulgirls · 01/07/2013 20:05

We love hydromol ointment.

Themobstersknife · 01/07/2013 20:10

I have had dreadful itchy eczema since DD2 arrived and the only thing that worked for me was Waitrose Bottom Butter! I have tried loads of things. My advice would be only buy small bottles of stuff as what works for one, doesn't work for another, as illustrated by this thread!

BabyStone · 01/07/2013 20:16

We were prescribed Aveeno for DS' dry skin however it made it a lot worse, I have started using it on myself and I am fine with it. The doctor has now prescribed 0.1% Hydrocortisone cream to reduce the redness etc and then Double Base cream. The rash has completely gone

shutitweirdo · 01/07/2013 20:23

I heard the coconut oil was good so got some from Holland and Barratt. DD is 2 and they recommended the hard one that is just oil. £6.99 is a bit steep but I got it and it is very good. The pot will probably last about a year. I wouldn't hesistate to recommend it to anyone.

Neutrogena dermatological - miracle cream

chrissiegsd · 02/07/2013 12:43

Another vote for coconut oil here! Only we now get ours from
Superdrug instead of Holland & Barratt as it's much cheaper.

When it's cold the oil sets to like a balm consistency, but a short while left on a radiator or in a bowl of warm water softens it up nicely.

LostInWales · 02/07/2013 12:50

I use coconut oil that I buy from a local shop. It is a white solid in the tub but melts as soon as it hits your skin, I use it on my body (my elephant hide elbows are now smooth), in my hair to make it shiny and in cooking because it is good for you!

Suttyshotty · 02/07/2013 12:52

I was also going to suggest coconut oil, boots do a pot for under £3, it's made a massive difference to my hideous dry flaky psoriasis and it smells lovely

LostInWales · 02/07/2013 12:57

I get this stuff from our local health food shop.

imaluckylady · 02/07/2013 12:59

Ask for double base from the doctor. It really is great stuff and will be free as a prescription for him.

apatchylass · 02/07/2013 13:08

Was going to suggest Diprobase but you already use it. DS aged 11 has an industrial-sized pump action bottle of it by his bed and puts it on after bath. he too has very dry skin and is prone to mild eczema. Diprobase works for him, and as a second best resort, Ponds Cocoa butter cream. Nothing else works, and stuff like Aveeno and Neutrogena makes it worse, so it must depend on skin type.

apatchylass · 02/07/2013 13:09

Oh, meant to say - avoid all antibacterial washes - they are the devil to dry skin. Normal mild soaps work just as well and don't cause eczema.

aboutagirl · 02/07/2013 13:09

Aveeno is fab.
