HELP! How do I get antibiotics in a 6 month old?!

Hi all,

My lovely little DS has got a burst ear drum, and has been given amoxycillin...only I just cannot get him to swallow it. He is on his 5th dose now, and all bar two of the doses, he has just spat back out.

I have tried...

Blowing in his face to make him swallow it...doesn't work.

Rubbing his chin and throat (this works with animals...thought i'd try it with him!)... Doesn't work.

Aiming it in his cheek rather than on his tongue/back of his mouth...doesn't work.

Holding his nose (feels evil, but I was getting desparate!)... Doesn't work.

I don't know what to do! He's going to get more poorly if I can't get him to take it, but he gets so upset when I try. I feel awful!

Anyone got any tips?

Are you using a syringe or a spoon?

ItsintheBag · 25/06/2013 12:06

Is he on solids? If so stick it on a spoon with a bit of petit flous.

If not stick his head right back and squirt a little into his cheek wait till it swallowed and then repeat. This only seems to tackle there ability to bring everything back up if the head is right back.
I would use a syringe it's easier to control.
My DD was the master at this so I feel your pain. Also make sure he gets the full antibiotic even if you have to get it re dispensed.

does he use a dummy ? my dd would always spit medicine out so I went to the cheat and got a dummy with a medicine dispenser on it. they don't even realise they're sucking it out

I've been using a syringe.

We have just started solids (about three weeks ago), but he isn't taking to it very well at all and is hardly eating anything at the moment because he is poorly. I will try tipping his head back and doing it a little bit at a time, let's see how that goes!

He is a bit fussy with dummies and has to be eeally really tired before he will take one, but I could definitely give a medicine dummy a go, it is certainly worth a try!

I am worried that he isn't getting anywhere near the right amount and is going to need a second course.

It is an impossible task, and you can't explain to babies that they need it! Thank you for the tios Smile

In the cheek as far back as you can squirt it and keep him lying down. As long as you get some down there, it'll do good.

Dd has been on a variety of meds since 16 weeks. Most infant medication of liquid should be issued with a syringe to use. Aim for right at the back of their cheek so they don't spit it out Grin

MortifiedAdams · 25/06/2013 12:50

I dont know whether this is allowed, but we put our doses in a bottle of milk.

Doodledumdums · 25/06/2013 15:49

Just have him another dose, I aimed for the back of the cheek with the syringe and did it slowly, but he just sprayed it all over me. It is so bloody difficult! Hopefully he is ingesting more than I think he is each time.

Unfortunately DS wont take a bottle at the moment, he just wants boob, so I don't think he will take it if I mix it with milk. If he would take a bottle then I would definitely do that!
