Anybody know what these spots could be?

My 2 year old has been developing these strange spots, she has had about 5 now over the last week. They start with a large red swolen circle with a small head of puss in the centre, the next day this has scabbed over and by the 3rd day they've pretty much disappeared.

She seems otherwise fine but did complain they were 'ouchy'. I've googled and can't find anything that matches, I've made a doctors appointment for Thursday but am concerned I might be spreading something around in the meantime. They don't look like impetigo, molluscum or chicken pox (my older dcs have had these so think I'd recognise them).

They look very much like these insect bites when they first appear, but non of the rest of the family have any and she hasn't been anywhere we haven't, and they're appearing one at a time over days. Any ideas please? I'm baffled!

Bed bugs?

AWimbaWay · 24/06/2013 22:21

I did think that but really checked her bed (it's only cot size so not much to check) and there isn't any sign of anything, also no one else in the family has them and I'd have thought something like bed bugs would spread throughout the house?

My DS had something really similar a few weeks ago, he had 18 spots in total which appeared 2 or 3 per day for a week or so. The following week I had to take him to the doc for something unrelated so raised it while I was there - he said it was likely to be an extremely mild case of chicken pox. DS has never had it 'properly' and had been exposed to it a couple of weeks before so the timing fit. Weird though as the spots looked nothing like cp blisters and didn't behave the same way.

AWimbaWay · 24/06/2013 22:23

Where would bed bugs come from? Trying to think if we've visited anywhere recently she could have picked them up but don't think we have. We don't have any pets so wouldn't have thought fleas either.

That's interesting zgaze, my first thought was chicken pox but the yellow head rather than blister and the fact she's had so few made me rule it out. Would hate to be spreading chicken pox around unintentionally!

Chickenpox, some people only get a few spots and nothing else (but are likely to get it again as they will not have built up sufficient immunity).

AWimbaWay · 24/06/2013 23:17

Think I'll keep her off pre-school until I've seen the GP just in case then, arghh had stuff I need to do including interviewing people for new pre-school manager where I was taking her with me.

I wrote pretty much the exact post a few days ago. I have googled everything but to no avail.
Does it look like the pic on my profile?

AWimbaWay · 24/06/2013 23:28

It's hard to tell Gumps as the photo comes up a bit small. They look most like a whitehead spot that you'd get as a teenager, she's only had them on her legs and one on her tummy.

Sorry photo is rubbish. My phone couldn't cope with anything bigger. She has about 10 in total. Some on her back, some on her chest but none on her arms or legs. Like you said red with a yellow head. She is only 20 mo so can't ask if they itch but don't seem to be bothering her. She was hideously out of sorts last week though.
She is dc3 and the other two haven't had the p

Gumps · 24/06/2013 23:31

Pox either.

AWimbaWay · 24/06/2013 23:34

It does sound very similar, mine is dc3 too but her older siblings have had chicken pox a couple of years ago, it didn't look like this but I guess they might not always look the same!

I'll see if I can get a good close up photo to post in the morning and I'll let you know what the doc says on Thursday Gumps to see if it helps with your Dd.

Well, no new spots and apart from one and the rest have either faded completely or are now really tiny and going fast, the remaining one is still a bit crusty Confused so I guess what ever they were I can cancel the doctors appointment! I have uploaded a photo of the remaining spot anyway and you can see one that's almost gone on the other leg.

I think I've discovered what it is, boils!

Gumps · 29/06/2013 22:46

Sorry for late response. Been laid up after a minor car accident.
Boils? How bizarre. What do they think caused them?
My dd's didn't looking that as they weren't that angry iyswim. I'm wondering if she had mild chicken pox. I am watching my nephew closely as they spend so much time together they usually share illnesses Grin.
Hope your dd is all mended.

lillibet1 · 30/06/2013 20:56

looks just like my son's chicken pox

Aetae · 30/06/2013 21:03

If it's boils you need to try to reduce the amount of staphylococci around or they'll come back - bedding and clothing on a hot wash, daily bath or shower for everyone and general good hygiene etc.

AWimbaWay · 05/07/2013 18:42

Just saw this, thanks Aetae, yes the gp said to wash everything and she's been given antibiotics. They said she's either picked it up at playgroup or it can spread from her picking her nose, get into a graze etc. She still has a couple so they're certainly persistent. Haven't spread to the rest of the family thankfully.
