Anyone's child had a nasty vomiting sickness? How long does it last?

My 5 yr old has been complaining of stomach aches on and off for nearly three weeks so when on Monday she started crying because of the pain (v unlike her) I booked an appointment at the docs. The doc pressed over her stomach but did not seem to think it was anything serious, however suggested that if it got worse to get some blood tests.

Everything seemed ok until Thursday evening when she was sick in her sleep. The next day I kept her off school and she was tired and not herself and not eating much, then Friday pm she threw up which carried on every 45 mins through to Sat lunch.

She has stopped vomiting so regularly (so now about once every 12 hrs) but keeps crying out saying her stomach hurt. She is attempting to eat TINY amounts such as a couple of mouthfuls of soup or a bite of bread. She is drinking squash and water and sucking on occasional ice lollies (again little bits at a time) so hopefully not dehydrating too much.

However the fact that the pain has not subsided and she is sleeping lots is worrying me. I have pressed on the appendix area to see if the pain is isolated but she told me it did not hurt and it is her central tummy area that is in pain. She is warm to the touch but no soaring temp (though does get hotter at night so we have been giving her occasional Calpol that seems to sort it out).

Does this sound familiar to any other parents? How long does it last? Many thanks.

I'd be getting her seen again in all honesty.

Get her seen to again. Poor child.

Also get a urine sample and get it checked for a UTI just to rule that out My symptoms for UTI's were feeling sick, vomiting etc and I would think it was a bug.

Could she be constipated?

If it is not a virus, a hernia maybe?

My dd2 was vomiting with diarrhoea for a week with her last bug, but had a raging fever too, so it might not be the same thing.

I would get her seen again, first thing tomorrow.

Hi thanks for the responses. We went to A&E after the emergency doctor failed to call us back (she was crying out in pain poor little thing - it was just awful).

They were brilliant, they monitored her, checked over her tummy and took a urine sample. They ruled out appendicitis and the test came back clear, they told us she was hydrated so we took her home again. They are going to check her sample again in a couple of days (did not understand that - I guess some infections cannot be identified immediately).

They told us that she has a nasty virus and just to keep doing what we are doing. All she is wanting to do is sleep and when awake I am syringing 10mm amounts of Dioralyte mixed with ribena and water (a bit of a battle-ground this one because of the taste). She is also drinking squash/water. No food yet, still tummy ache but no vomiting for 30hrs.... fingers crossed.

Glad it is nothing serious but sorry it's still on going.

I think I would avoid dairy as it can irritate tummies after illness.

Ready salted crisps are good when recovering. Has salt/fat/carbs that often goes missing in your body when poorly.

Hope all clears up soon
