My 13 mth old daughter had a seizure today. It frightened the life out of me- it has been put down to a virus or maybe over heating, they are not sure at the moment have to watch for rashes / temps over the next few days. Anyway I am looking to enrol in First Aid Courses for babies/children. Thus far I can only find Red Cross and St Johns - costs vary between £50-£100. I thought I would post to see if there was any local knowledge about courses- living in East Bristol.

Thanks

Oh dear, my heart goes out to you, my DD had a febrile convulsion when she was two and it still haunts me years later. It was so frightening.

I'm sorry but I don't know about the First Aid courses. I do know though that febrile convulsions are due to the speed of the temperature rising, rather than the actual temperature itself. So, if your DD is starting to run a temperature, take immediate steps to cool her down. Give her a dose of calpol, leave her in just a nappy, put a fan on her and give her a drink.

If I were you I would keep up with calpol regularly over the next few days. Good luck, hope that helps a little.

Ask at GP surgery, I did this and was told if there was enough demand they would run a course. So I got several of ante-natal group of friends to go in and ask, and true to their word, the surgery put on a course of lessons. Admittedly a few years ago (DS is 12) but I've always been glad of it and got the notes out every so often to refresh my memory (have since done an updated course sponsored by work). Have never had cause to use it TG but have a friend who resuscitated an elderly man having a heart attack recently - a valuable skill and will give you some peace of mind to know that you could act if it came to it.

So sorry, started off by saying sorry about your DD and then lost post, re-wrote it and didn't put that bit in Blush

I think portico play in st Andrews used to do first aid courses for much cheaper, run by an ex-paramedic. not sure if they still do. Sorry can't remember details, I vaguely remember a friend mentioning it a while ago. There's also a seminar type thing called "poorly poppets" run by a gp that's a fiver but not sure what it covers. Hope your dd recovers soon

Oh god that sounds all wrong, I wasn't suggesting your DD is going to have a heart attack SORRY Blush, just an example of how you never know when first aid may be useful.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice- I just can't relax now- keep checking on her- even though her temp is 36.3- think i might continue with Calpol just encase temp spikes overnight.

She's had a chesty cough- green runny nose for few weeks- the nose has been clearing up in the last few days- chesty cough persisting though. saw GP over wk ago he put down to a virus.

Her appetite/fluids unchanged- little bit sleepier than normal the last 2 days. put her down for her nap as usual- then few hours later she woke up high pitched screeching (unusual for her)-went straight into a seizure. She then threw up in the ambulance- it took her a good hour to fully recover.

The temp in her room now is between 19-20c- have got window open and she is wearing a legless jump suit- might take that off after reading posts.

sorry if sound bit obsessive- any tips gratefully received- they said in A&E this is very common- being 1st time mum (2nd on the way)!!! don't really have a comparison. And feeling very nervy!

Thanks for the tip about GP- will make enquiries-

inmyheadimthequeen- please don't worry message taken with the spirit intended.

Thanks again everyone :)

Try SureStart - they used to do first aid courses round us, so maybe country-wide?

The Nct run first aid courses.

You know you can give ibuprofen for a temperature as well as calpol? You can give both together or alternate.
