3year old DD has what looks like an infection "down below"

DD has been experiencing a horrible discharge, I think it's some sort of infection.

She wont let me anywhere near it and for obvious reasons I don't want to traumatise her and force her.

This morning she let me look with the promise not to put cream on (I tried to persuade her to have some sudocrem on yesterday) It's all yellowy green and crusty Sad

She has an appointment with the doctor today but she is in hysterics about it. I'm not sure what to do? Does anyone know whether there's some sort of lotion that can be added to a bath? She's gonna fight me tooth and claw if I have to put cream on her.

can she wee ok?

she's prob resistant to you looking/touching because it's sore, if you explain to your GP hopefully you'll be pxd something that isn't topical - adding a big spoon of bicarb to her bath (with no other products) will help soothe the skin and have no contraindications to any meds.

also, can you talk to her and explain (if you get any that is) that the cream etc is medicine, that will only work if it goes on her skin?

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 14:06

Don't put anything on her until she's been to the gp then take it from there once you know what it is.

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 14:07

I would put a big handful of salt in the bath.

Madmog · 20/06/2013 14:10

I'm sorry, but I think you need to get her to the doctor to be sure what you're dealing with. Slightly different thing, but my daughter looked sore and tender under her armpit when she was young, I bathed it in salted water but the next day it was 10X worse and very smelly, so you do need to get the right treatment. The hysterics could well be the fact she's having to face up to something not being right with her and unsure about whats going to happen.

Perhaps, you could plan something fun for after the doctor and tell her what when you've seen the doctors, you're going to a play area, are planning to do something fun at home or perhaps a little chocolate treat, that may give her something positive to focus on as well.

Hope it goes okay.

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 14:13

Mad, it was probably because the warm water drew out out.

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 14:14

I second chocolate as a distractionWink

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/06/2013 14:18

Oh yes she's definitely in hysterics because she's afraid to go to the doctors. I took her to the toy aisle in ASDA and explained she could have anything she wanted if she was a good girl and let the doctor look at her and if she let me put the cream on.

She still wouldn't even with the promise of a Cinderella doll and a hello kitty house thing.

She seems open to the idea of taking her medical kit and showing the doctor her stethoscope though.

And yes she's weeing fine. I will explain about cream being medicine and hopefully that will help.

Wait and see what the doc says, she might not need cream at all.

Wrt being upset, it would largely get ignored in this house, you need to take medicine/have cream put on and that is that. That's not to say big cuddles aren't given but in not particular phased by hysterics IF it's for the good of the child.

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 14:23

I'm not in-silly phone!

NikkiTwinkle · 20/06/2013 14:23

If it comes to cream let her have a go at putting it on herself!

I know it sounds crazy but we're having a problem with recurrent thrush and the only way I can get my DD to put cream is to let her do it herself. We clean hands, get the mat out, she lies down and puts cream on her fingers and then promptly gets it everywhere and vaguely in the right direction. I quickly whip some cream on whilst she's nicely distracted!

It was the only way we could persuade her to do it without it turning into a trauma.

Good luck

RippingYarns · 20/06/2013 14:24

if she's weeing fine, maybe if she gets cream you can put it on some toilet paper and put it on like that?

good luck

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 14:24

Good idea nikki.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/06/2013 14:31

nikki that's brilliant! I can totally see her going for that. Thank you.

Just spoken with DD and we have success! She is very happy with the idea of being a big girl and putting the cream on herself.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/06/2013 15:41

How did it go OP?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/06/2013 19:21

It went great, she was quite happy to let him have a look. It looks very sore bless her Sad She has cream! Went straight to ASDA to pick up the hello fucking kitty mini house thing and a pair of pink sparkly shoes.

Thanks everyone for responding and thank you NikkiTwinkle for the genius idea of letting her do it herself.

valiumredhead · 20/06/2013 20:07

Oh good, what a relief !

Lottie4 · 21/06/2013 10:39

What a relief. I guess it was fear of the unknown and hopefully she'll realise that doctors can help make you better. Hope things start to improve soon.
