DS fever since 6am

DS is nearly 2 and a half. He woke this morning with a temperature of just over 39 and seemed ok. He got quite upset just before 9 so I gave maximum calpol (7.5). He brightened up slowly until he fell asleep at 12. Temp had dropped to just over 38.

I didn't wake him for more calpol, and he slept and slept. I took his temp after 3 hours and it was 40.2. So I woke him and gave another maximum calpol. He's awake and responsive but still not himself. Temp still 39.5

I'm not sure what to do; he's got no rash or anything and he doesn't reliably say if he's got pain.

Have you got a Nurofen , you can give him that as well as the Calpol.

If he's just got the temperature and isn't acting in a way to cause you concern I'd be happy to just keep on doing what you're doing.

A raised temperature is the body's way of killing bugs so it wouldn't overly worry me.

PseudoBadger A high temperature can make them feel horrible, so from the point of view of comfort you can give them Calpol and Nurofen so they feel better in themselves. Also, try and give them plenty of water to drink.

How is DS in himself? If he doesn't have any pain or rash then it is likely to be a viral infection that will go away by itself. It is so difficult when they are so little to tell what is wrong - if he seems very upset and still has a temperature and you are worried, you can phone out-of-hours gp and speak to someone. I have found them very helpful when I have called.

Yes, do use Nurofen, too - you can time it so DS is never without something in his system, which will help bring and keep the temp down.

Thank you, the last dose of calpol has definitely cheered him up. I hadn't yet given nurofen as he hadn't eaten. I couldn't see on the bottle about not giving on an empty stomach (like for adults) so I erred on the side of caution. Ill give him some before bed though as he's had a boiled egg now. He's got diarrhoea now so just a virus I'm sure...
Thank you!

Also, just make sure you remember symptoms for meningitis/septicimia - they're the one things to look out for (rash that doesn't disappear when you press a glass on it etc).
