Grommets plus tonsillectomy and adenoids out?

Just been advised both my boys should have this rather than just grommets (ds2 5yrs 2 sets of grommets, ds3 4 yrs 1 set of grommets) neither have any infections, rare coughs, colds or illness

Has anyone's little one had this? What made you chose it over just grommets?

I had this when I was a child, after suffering tonsillitis. I didn't think they took tonsils out unless there were a lot of problems now?

My son had grommets and adenoid removal, which was good for us (in fact just adenoids might've been just as good), because it was infected adenoids (lots of green snot), causing his ears to look red/infected all the time.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

can't comment re tonsils, but when DS had grommets, they took his adenoids out because the consultant said that was probably what was causing the build up in his ears. So the grommets would help drain, and having the adenoids out would help recurrence. But that was c. 16 years ago so a) I might not have remembered properly and b) thinking might have changed... others will be along soon, hopefully some ENT specialists!!

Thanks for replying

Dh had 2 sets of grommets and adenoids with second set - we have strong family history of glue ear, consultant said removing both would be best chance of not having to have grommets again but it's an unexpected recommendation because they have no infections but severe hearing loss

My ds had no infections either, 'just' hearing loss but consultant said adenoids could have been causing the problem.

do you think there is any reason why he suggested adenoids and tonsils? I'm starting to see that adenoids out could help, and they do reduce in size in adulthood, but healthy tonsils - I figure they stick around because they are part of the immune system?
