Dreaded pox

DS has finally succumbed to the pox. I noticed what I thought was a scratch on Wednesday and sent him into school as he seemed fine. He stayed with my folks that night and woke up with about 10 spots in the morning. He woke last night at 2am and we started piggybacking the ibuprofen/calpol/piriton and applying calamine. Today I lost count at 100 spots, some in his hair/nose/groin and becoming increasingly itchy. Calamine isn't cutting it. Just gave him a porridge bath and dabbed him with the last of my pure aloe vera gel. Some of the spots look yellowish and raised, is this normal? How long does this all last? He's being SO brave but is really very miserable. Virasoothe or Poxclin next? Possibly something homeopathic too? HELP?

poxacillin foam gave my dd good comfort. The spots go full of fluid kinda yellow to scabbing .If you suspect any are infected /look sore or hot and angry do take him to the gp. both of mine had complications with it that needed a gp hope you all get through it fast its horrible

ItsintheBag · 07/06/2013 22:34

forgot get bicarbinate soda and put it in the bath as many times as you can my dc got the most relief and it helped keep the spots clean

It is advised not to use ibuprofen with chicken pox.

Paracetamol is the preferred painkiller for treating the associated symptoms of chickenpox. This is due to a very small risk of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),such as ibuprofen, causing adverse skin reactions during chickenpox. (nhs) which of course can make risk of infection worse.

I found lots of cool baths, porridge oats, bicarbonate and piriton. Hope he is over it soon.

monikar · 07/06/2013 22:47

Piriton may help with the itching.

New spots appear for a few days and are yellow - this is normal. They will then form scabs in a few more days and then they wont itch anymore and DS will no longer be infectious. Then after a few more days the scabs drop off. At this stage, I thought DD would be scarred for life, but honestly after a week or two the scars really fade.

Thanks everyone. Terrible night last night, he was so forlorn. There was a lot of redness around the spots, will lay off the ibuprofen today and see if that makes a difference. Will invest in some Poxclin and Rhu Tox homeopathic as soon as Boots open their doors this morning. Thanks again.

Trying to get hold of some Medised for tonight, he's never had it, they've discontinued it, but all my trusted mummy friends have given it to under 6's on rare occasions with no adverse effects. DS is almost 5. Piriton is doing absolutely nothing now, the itching is SO bad.

If it is any consolation, my DD reached the height of her itching on about day 3 after the spots came out and then the itching seems to subside somewhat. It is a miserable time for them and for you.

HystericalParoxysm · 08/06/2013 08:54

Agree with not using ibuprofen. I wouldn't use calamine either as once it dries out it makes the spots more itchy. I recommend Virasoothe or Eurax instead. Definitely bicarb in the bath and keep the Piriton going. Keep the child cool as heat makes the more itchy. Hope it clears soon.

bumbleymummy · 08/06/2013 09:00

We used porridge baths and aqueous calamine. They both seemed to stop the itching really well.

I do remember reading something about paracetemol prolonging the itching. Something to do with the scans taking longer to form.

bumbleymummy · 08/06/2013 09:01

You put porridge oats inside a sock/cut up pair of tights btw - I don't want you to end up with a really messy bath! :)

bumbleymummy · 08/06/2013 09:01

Scabs*

EvianBaby · 08/06/2013 09:02

My DD started with it on Sunday so we are just about on the other side... We've used ( porridge) oat baths, virasoothe, poxclin & calpol. No ibuprofen. Oh & germolene (sp?) on the spots that looked particularly sore and at risk of infection.

Good luck, it does get better after its got worse :)

gillythekid · 08/06/2013 21:27

Poxclin useless. Rhu tox taken, but who knows? Just had to go and get Germolene. He's still awake despite three spoonfuls of illicit Medised. Poor bunny, if we're this exhausted, I HATE to think how he is feeling!

Can't see homeopathy making any difference tbh! Eurax, seriously.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/06/2013 22:42

Medised contains paracetamol - please be careful and don't over dose him. Don't give him other products with paracetamol.

Mediated has had it's license changed for good reasons.

Calamine aqueous cream gave our ds's better relief than the lotion. As did light, loose clothing, fans, lots of cool baths and drinks.

Medication isn't always the answer. Hope he's better soon.

gillythekid · 08/06/2013 22:44

Pharmacist says Eurax is pretty much the same as Poxclin. The germolene seems to have been the best so far. He is finally asleep...but for how long?
