Green goo in 8 wk old right eye

For the last two mornings DD has woken up with what looks like sticky sleep in her right eye. Is this the start of conjunctivitis? I cleared it yesterday with cool boiled water and there was some again (not as much) after a long nap. I think she has had a bit of a cold so wondering if it could be related. Just wondering if I should see the GP as I don't want it to get worse over the weekend, but also don't want to hang round the doctors unnecessarily. Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

well it is some sort of infection. are the eyes red or surrounding area really swollen?

if it is just the snot looking crusting I wouldn't worry.

but of course you could just call the GP and they might be able to advise you over the phone

do you breast feed?

a few drops of bm should sort it.

Thanks. It's not red or crusty or swollen, just oozy. I do BF, I'll try the breast milk but make an appointment anyway. Don't fancy it being worse over the weekend and having to source out of hours GPs etc...
Thanks again.

yes, best to check with a professional.

the BM thing is easy to do, just squeeze a few drops straight into each eye as many times a day as you like.

can I suggest one thing?

next time you have a vaginal smear ask them to test for STREP B infection.

I had found out I had this when pg with DS4 and when I learnt about what the implications are when giving birth it dawned on me that DS3 may have caught it during very quick birth and was possibly the cause of his returning ear and eye infections.

this may not be the case for you and DD, and I don't even know if my DS3 infections can be blamed on Strep B, but if you find out you have it that will be important information that needs to go on your maternity notes should you have another child.

hope she gets better quickly

and of course congratulations!

Thanks. Missed my last smear as was pg, so will make sure to ask at the next one soon.

Thanks for the advice- it's so overwhelming having a newborn. Treading a constant line between doing the right thing and being a neurotic nut!

understandable!

especially with your first - which she is, by the sound of it! Grin

a good way to avoid being neurotic about things is to observe. to look at what actually happened.
write it down so you can read later, when not so emotional or worried.

but if in doubt definitely listen to your gut instinct above all else! your child, your decision and you have to deal with the consequences!

that served me well so many times before, but one event sticks out. we were on a holiday at a friends house and were due to leave after lunch on the Thursday, day before Good Friday (therefore 4 days without GP)

our three kids were all sorts of coughing, sneezing, raised temperature etc riddled by Wednesday morning, so I told DH that we should leave that evening so I can take them all to the doctors in the morning.

he said why should we cut our holiday short, they will be fine and anyway it's not very polite to leave earlier...

I told him that he can either drive us home or I'll get a cab, but we are going.

so we did, cue GP's vist the next day with the result of DS1 - tonsillitis, DS2 - viral throat infection, DS3 - ear infection.

I was "victorious"!
I knew it, I knew they were ill! I told him that I will not say "I told you so" but I never, ever want him to doubt my tiger mother instincts. ever.
And I'm so glad I was not swayed by anyone's emotions or reactions or anything.

I hope this helps!

Thanks. It is so easy to doubt yourself, so thank you for giving me confidence to go with my gut. She is the first and so far we've been coping okay.

To update: the doctor said that as it wasn't red there probably wasn't an infection and it's likely to be a blocked tear duct. Wash with cool boiled water mimicking the action of a tear so outside to in, and then press gently on the inner corner of the eye to get some water into the eye and to also help massage the duct. I have a prescription just in case it does get red or swollen over the weekend.

Hope this is helpful if anyone needs it in the future!
