How do I know if ds's dentist is doing a good job.

ds1 (8) has terrible teeth. About 4 have been filled now. One was rotten right down to the gum even as it grew through so it's only ever been a hollow shell.

I've often wondered if he is lacking enamel due to birth trauma as a friend mentioned it as a possibility. Dentist says he just needs to brush his teeth and use mouthwash - which he does.

At last visit dentist prescribed fluoride tablets, but pharmacist says we aren't allowed them.

Have just seen on NHS websites that fluoride varish is available on NHS and should be used as a preventative treatment in children. I'd never heard of this. Has anyone else?

How do I tell if ds's dentist is doing everything he can to help look after his teeth? And if not what can I do about it. I always ask 'are we doing everything we can?' and the repsonse is to brush more and use mouthwash.

dc have fissure sealants on permanent molars although I think opinion is divided about their effectiveness so yours may want to wait or do this as an alternative . Can you ask to see a hygienist at the practice? Too much fluoride can be damaging which may be the pharmacist's issue

Teeth can't grow through decayed.
In would pay privately to see a hygienist. They really are the experts in educating and demonstrating about habits to keep your teeth healthy.

Where in the UK are you? Our wonderful "national" health service has lots of regional variations.
