8wk injections and piercing screams :(

My little girl had her injections this afternoon at 2pm was fine-screamed, got over it. But since I've been home from 5pm she's been screaming the worst scream, piercing screeching full belly howling, inconsolable. I've given her some Calpol. Rang docs and he's said some babies react that way. Has anyone else's baby reacted this way? Just to confirm it IS normal?

Mine didn't but there was a baby in my local leisure centre a few weeks ago and she was screaming exactly like you say, she had also had her injections that day. Real inconsolable screaming. Hope someone else can come along with more answers.. X

Allthatglitters789 · 03/06/2013 19:28

Yes, definitely normal both mine have done it. She should be feeling better in the morning.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 03/06/2013 19:29

When my DD had her 8 week jabs she cried and screamed for pretty much the rest of the day. I've got her 13 month ones coming up. Can't wait Hmm

Mine screamed for about 3 hours, in the end I was in tears too. The next day she was fine, but it really worried me at the time.

plannedshock · 03/06/2013 20:08

Well i'd like to say I'm relieved but its not nice that your babies were the same :( I was in tears myself! It's just horrid when there's nothing you can do. Thank you for your replies its put my mind at ease a little. When it's your 1st you really just don't know do you?

Yes, although it was over 4 years ago, I can remember it very clearly! Not too bad straight after the jabs, but a few hours later all hell let loose. Shock. Not nice, but hopefully she is having a lovely sleep now.

Ragusa · 03/06/2013 23:25

I am going to go against the grain here and say, if your DD's scream is really unusual (for her), high-pitched, long-lasting and doesn't abate with calpol, then I would get a second opinion.

I am sure it's very very likely to be normal, but there is no harm in double checking and the doctor will not mind (unless s/he is a n*b!).

bumbleymummy · 04/06/2013 07:58

I agree with Ragusa. It may be nothing but high-pitched inconsolable crying can be a sign of something more serious. Did she settle eventually?

plannedshock · 04/06/2013 23:30

Day 2 and she did eventually settle but we have gone back to feeding every hour and sleeping for 20min power naps!! Great!

Planned shock, i'm so glad I have just seen your post. I experienced the same thing last wednesday. About 3 hours afterwards, my little one started crying and did not stop all day. Even during short periods of sleep (on me) I could not move. The slightest movement and she would scream. She was also sick for the first time Sad and completely lost her appetite.

Like I say I am just relieved that my baby is not the only one to have reacted this way. I did speak to gp as I was not sure she should have next injection but her useless responce was 'she was probably crying as she thought you were going to jab her again-- Hmm really!?

Anyway, I am DREADING the next one in a months time. I cried so badly on wednesday when she was upset, i'm really worried the next one will be the same.

I read online the 12 week booster has less of an effect on them, has anyone experienced this?

monikar · 08/06/2013 20:04

As I said upthread I had the screaming for 3 hours after the first one, she went off her feeds a bit for a couple of days after the second one but no other symptoms at all, and then nothing at all for the third one.

LoveSewingBee · 08/06/2013 21:52

Yes, the high pitched, totally out of character, screaming started about 2-3 hours after the jabs. We went to GP as it was so out of character but GP could not find anything wrong.

All went back to normal during the next few days.

MrsMummyP · 10/06/2013 11:34

Am so glad to have read this. DD had her 8 wk injections on Friday and the screaming has been intermittent, but for apparently no reason. We have also gone back to feeding every hour and power naps- just as we were getting a nice pattern established! The crying seems to have stopped but she is still not feeding well.

leavesalmondoutofit · 10/06/2013 12:13

Sorry all your babies are having such a miserable time after their jabs.

If the screaming is piercing and prolonged see your GP and at least get it noted. The crying can be a bit like when you see them dreaming, they are remembering the nip of the jab I hate when I see them give a shudder.

The PCV (pneumococcal) jab is sore even for some adults and can last a few days. This might be what is causing the babies to be upset. They have this jab at the first and third set of jabs and also at 1yr plus.

It can be hard sometimes to remember what the immunisations are for in the first place when everyone is upset.
