What could be wrong with DS?

Ds is 11.

He had a horrible viral infection 3 weeks ago and he did his SATS exams and left at 12 noon everyday and went home to bed.

Here are his symptoms.....

Tired
Lethargic
Pale
Little appetite
He nibbles at his food like a bird
Doesn't drink much

So I thought maybe it is the after effects of the viral infection but he has been like this for a while.

He is also a carrier of Thalasemia which is a form of anaemia and so maybe he is really anaemic.

Am booking a doc's appointment for tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any idea......

My ds is also a thalassaemia carrier and although he's only 6, he often gets like you have described your ds.
One thing that has helped is having a gp who has some knowledge of carriers as most docs dismiss any symptoms that could be relevant.
Advice does say that although iron count is low in carriers they don't need the extra iron but every now and again when my ds get's like yours the gp gives him a month of iron tablets and it perks him right up.
Maybe worth considering.

Oh thanks bananacoconuts!! Smile

That is really helpful.

I think ds2 might be a carrier too as all the males in dh's family are but we never had him tested.

I will def say what you said to the doctor.

Do you give him any particular foods to boost him?

Sounds very familiar. My daughter (also thalassaemia carrier) has been like this a few times after viruses.
Red meat washed down with orange juice (helps them absorb the iron!)

Grunt.....would love to get red meat down ds.....he is such a pain and says it is too chewy!! Shock

Could make a beef chilli though....he likes that.

Ds is also a very picky eater so all the red meat etc will not work here! Advice we have had (and so far proved to work) is to allow ds to be a snacker. He is served meals but with little expectation now (whereas i would prefer him to finish in the past!). And if he's hungry an hour later then he has something else. (Like raw veg or fruit to keep his sugar levels up) Obviously avoiding too much sugar! Also we have switched to lactofree milk. Can't remember why this was recommended (maybe to avoid the sugars!) but it hasn't had a detrimental affect so we're sticking with it!
