I am feeling rather sorry for myself. We were due to fly today for our two week family holiday, and yesterday, just after I'd finished packing, I had a phone call to collect dd2 from nursery with suspected chicken pox.
Yesterday was awful, trying to decide what to do, trying to fathom whether it really was the pox. Anyway, we decided it would be wrong to fly and too early to get a diagnosis from GP so I have stayed at home with her. Dh and dd1 have still gone and I am hoping dd2 and I will be able to join them in a week. I am totally gutted as I have been planning and packing and looking forward to this for ages, and I'm sad that it has meant our family has been split up. Dd1 has already had CP although it was very mild so she shouldn't be at risk.
The thing is, I'm not even sure it is CP, the spots started with a few red bigger ones around her mouth where she usually has a dribble rash, and then a pinprick type rash in the nappy area. None have blistered and the nappy ones look better than they first did. She does have a couple in one elbow crease and the back of one knee, but nothing on her torso. How soon do they usually blister? Is it too soon to tell? Does this sound like it could be hand, foot and mouth rather than CP?
I really want to go on holiday! Hmm

Tbh I would've got an emergency gp app to see what he see said and then would've gone depending on diagnosis.

I've seen the doctor today and she can't say for sure but either way she said she's unfit to fly as it could well be chicken pox. Rubbish.

It is still chickenpox 'season' (March-May apparently). Our baby had it last week. It took about a while - about 24 hours? - for the first blisters to appear, before that it was just raised red spots. Yours does sound as if it might be hand, foot and mouth though, since it didn't begin on the trunk; my handy paediatrician friend says that's the only other thing that really looks like chicken pox. Poor you about the holiday! Hope you can find some nice things to do at home. If it is c-pox they feel a lot better once the spots have fully appeared, and you are OK to be out and about after five days so should be OK to join for the second week.

Thanks kalidasa. We still have no blisters and no more spots. It's been well over 24 hours since first spots now. I wonder what the rules are for flying with hand, foot and mouth...

yes it sounds like hand foot and mouth. I think from memory it says on nhs website there is no need to isolate.

Ds had chickenpox which started as 2 spots on his leg which didn't blister for about 4 days. I didn't realise he had chickenpox til I discovered 2 more spots under each armpit one of which had blistered.

Can I just say a massive thank you to you for making that decision. My 4 year old son is receiving treatment for leukaemia and chickenpox poses a massive risk to him. Whenever we go anywhere I am having to trust that other parents are being responsible and keeping infectious children at home, but the amount of times I see or hear of infectious children being in cinemas, school etc is actually quite terrifying. The fact that you have made the right decision for everyone else, despite it causing you upset and inconvenience is incredibly heartwarming for me to read and gives me a bit of faith!

I really hope your DD is ok and that you manage to join your family on holiday xx

donnie · 30/05/2013 18:16

my dd's chpox started on her neck. They do NOT always begin on the trunk.

Ninping · 30/05/2013 18:33

Thank you for posting Tabitha, I am so sorry to hear of your son's leukaemia. I read up about about the risks to vulnerable people and decided that whilst it's really sad for us, it could lead to something far more serious for someone else. Hard as it was to stay behind, I am glad we did.

Ds had 2 tiny pimple spots for 2/3 days before getting a lot lot more and the original ones becoming blistery.

Thanks for making right decision, my dad is immune compromised and I recently fell out with a fried because she was carrying on as normal just putting her daughters hair down, hat on and long sleeved tops.

My son had chicken pox last summer and never got any spots on his trunk - they were all on his arms and a couple of other places.
