Could this be measles?

DS has suddenly come up with a red raised rash starting around his chin and going down his chest.

It looks very blotchy just now but not itchy and the spots don't seen fluid filled. They are mostly together and don't look like individual spots.

2 nights ago he had a terrible nights sleep and was running a slight fever but no obvious symptoms. Yesterday he stared with a snotty nose and this afternoon the spots have appeared.

I've googled the rash and it looks exactly like the pictures of the start of measles.

However he seems fine and most of what I've read says he'd have a fever and would feel really rough.

He is 3.11 and had his first mmr jab but due to moving around and not finding a new doc yet we are a little late with his booster.

Is he likely to get measles if he's had the first mmr?

Oh I'm really sorry, what a nightmare. My Dr at the time (not the OOH who diagnosed it) said, did it start on his head, and I said I wasn't sure and they said that that would probably rule it out then. Or something.

You are SO unlucky CharlieUniform. It is not like you were late with booster either.
I am glad he seems not too unwell with it and hope he is better soon.
Good luck with housing etc and take care.

I hope it proves to be a mild case. Well done for spotting it and keeping him isolated - that will make a difference to your community. I hope your housing is now settled. Hugs.

The HPA mouth swab is fairly easy to use. It comes in a belt and braces post it back to us kit. Its a firm pink large holed sponge that is like a small lolly on a stick. You wipe it across the gums for the time allocated but do have a hefty bribe to hand if your son has a sore mouth. Its not intended to be harsh on sore gums but Elly at 15 found the thing tasted foul and made her mouth feel raw after using it; a cold drink and choice of dvd helped.
Try and get the swab sent back ASAP as it will help in two ways.
Confirm where measles is trying to appear next
Allow the HPA to make contact with any vulnerable people and alert them of the need for vaccination or extra care.

Hope you only have a short visit from the spotted red menance and your son bounces back to his old self very soon. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up Triballeader - I'll make sure we stash an icelolly as bribery then.

Hope you're soon rid of the menace then!

Sunflower - it's been a run of bad luck these last 6 months but it has to turn sometime right? Think I'll get a lottery ticket just in case :)

The housing is pretty much settled for now. We are in a long term temp place and should be here for 18 months I think. So we can sort out the doctors etc. In the end, my old one agreed to see us given what it was.

Hopefully it will remain quite mild. He's dozing on the couch just now. His eyes are starting to look a bit red tough. GP said that's usually started before the spots so I hoped we'd missed that stage. Still, he's much better then I anticipated so far.

Kids eyes can go very red from measles - if they do its usually a lot more comfy if you keep the curtains drawn and the light dim and away from his eyes. They do tend to dribble a bit with clear tears. I found using colled boiled saline witha clean cottonwool pad for each eye the best way to clean Elly's eyes and reduce the risk of a secondary infection.
Hopefully your only dealing with measles conjuctivities [virus causes it] but his eyelids get very puffy, his eyes get gooey and very sore get your GP back in to check up on him.

bigbuttons · 18/04/2013 09:22

they get quite a cough with measles too. 5 of mine had it last year.

Stressedtothehilt · 19/04/2013 13:32

Try and keep lights low or get him to wear sunglasses so as not to damage his eyes even after spots have gone. What area are you in if dont mind me asking.
Dd2 hasn't had mmr yet either she's 3.8 but going for single measles jab on Sunday

Yes to the darkened room, my friend has been left with eyes that are damaged and sensitive to the light from a case of childhood measles.
