He has survived the most horrific cancer treatment with his smile, joy and love intact. Unfortunately the neuroblastoma has survived too.

TrampyPants · 17/04/2013 21:09

well, quite. shame they can't read.

I wish I could donate blood too, but I would like to donate some cash, if possible.

Trazzles, my thoughts are with you all x

StealthOfficialCrispTester · 17/04/2013 21:09

and another report!

StealthOfficialCrispTester · 17/04/2013 21:10

has taken me two goes to get on the blood.co.uk site - think they're experiencing high demand!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 17/04/2013 21:10

Anyways what I really wanted to say is... Trazzle I am so sorry for your son's illness and what your whole family is going through. I have always believed I can't donate blood due to medication and an inherited genetic condition, but I realise now through this thread that I have never really investigated it for myself, to know 100% for sure.

Would love to contribute to Disney and am off to look for Candlelighters too xxx

elfycat · 17/04/2013 21:11

and another report.

BTW despite being a nurse I have a huge fear of needles (when aimed at me). It took 4 people to hold me down for a blood test when I was 15. I'm better now, but might faint...

StealthOfficialCrispTester · 17/04/2013 21:13

blood site veeeery slow, we will all need to persevere :)

elfycat · 17/04/2013 21:14

Oh and I pledge Dh too. He did give before (mostly to get out of army PT on a Weds afternoon). He'd rather give blood than run while being shouted at. I've told him this and he sighed which is acceptance/
consent in my book.

TrampyPants · 17/04/2013 21:16

oooh, I can pledge dh! he donated after my ep (I had a couple of transfusions) and I will make him go again.

Trazzle I would like to run a charity race in Joe's honour.
I'm rubbish at running.
I try to run every here and there.
If I can gather enough sponsors, I'll run a half-marathon or even a marathon in order to a) send Joe and you all to Disneyland and b) raise funds for the cause.
I live in Devon.
The thought only came to me just now so I will need to look into local races, but anyone who wants to support/run alongside me/offer suggestions is most welcome.

TicTacSir · 17/04/2013 21:26

By 'every here and there' I mean roughly once a season!!

hackneyzoo · 17/04/2013 21:26

Have just booked an appointment to give blood next week Smile And will give the rest of the family a prod with my prodding stick to go and do the same.

Trazzle and mini trazzle am thinking of you lots and sending all the love I can your way. I love the nick name 'Nudey-Joe', I have a Rudey Judey in the nudey of a similar age.

OliviaMumsnet · 17/04/2013 21:26

Sorry 'bout delay

NorksAreMessy · 17/04/2013 21:30

YAY for hackney and her magnificent prodding stick :)

expatinscotland · 17/04/2013 21:46

Thank you so much, Hairy! Those nurses are FAB. I used to schedule my appointments when Aillidh was in Yorkhill, and tell them why. In and out! My bed would be waiting for me to give :)

These children need much blood and platelets. Children with neuroblastoma, like Joe, are often treated with autologous stem cell transplant and need platelets. And all other cancers. The chemo devestates them. In the end it was the effects of the chemo that made Aillidh unable to recover from the secondary infections she contracted after treatment. And she is far from alone.

Despite giving blood regularly since I was 18, I didn't realise how much need there is.

Keep giving!

I don't like needles, REALLY don't, to the point where they make me faint.

But after seeing what Aillidh went through, what all these children go through, it gives mettle!

Super-Joe indeed! Absolutely.

For Joe. For Aillidh. Give a pint. Give platelets. Register as a bone marrow donor. Register as an organ donor.

Sending wishes for strength and peace to many of you on this thread including Super Joe and his family.

Haven't given blood since smallest dc arrived a while back. Will give at first opportunity.

Jaistarmum · 17/04/2013 22:01

So sorry to hear. What the next step with treatment?

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 17/04/2013 22:02

And I pledge to recruit a newbie to blood donation too. :eyes up suitable candidates:

maxmissie · 17/04/2013 22:06

Sending my thoughts to you tonight Trazzle, so sorry about the decisions you will have to make, so sad that sometimes having a choice is not a good thing.

Off to donate tomorrow so will try and remember to ask about the platelets. Have also signed DH up for next donation session in two weeks.

stealthsquiggle · 17/04/2013 22:08

Have we crashed blood.co.uk then? I registered yesterday and got an email saying they will send forms etc.

StealthOfficialCrispTester · 17/04/2013 22:10

Well I'm sure you used to be able to book a session online but it dosnt seem that you can anymore so I'm not going to bother with the site, and will just call tomorrow

RMSeries2 · 17/04/2013 22:14

Long term lurker and previous poster (under a name change) here. I am utterly gutted for you and your family Trazzles and hoping there is some hope. I can't give blood as I'm a previous recipient, but DH who is seriously phobic has just booked a session for next week. I've pushed him into donating before but he has lapsed. Now kicked up the butt to do so again in Joe's honour.

NorksAreMessy · 17/04/2013 22:16

YAY for max

NorksAreMessy · 17/04/2013 22:16

YAY for RM's DH. :)

Theonlyoneiknow · 17/04/2013 22:41

DP and I will donate blood when they are next here and I will ask about platelets. Am an organ donor so will go and find out about bone marrow xxx
