Hi just wanted to raise abit of awareness about Pyloric Stenosis . At 5 weeks My DS Started bringing full feeds back up all the time (that much he chocked once) he also lost 9oz in a week which is drastic at that age apparently . After many tears and explaining myself and pleading with doctors we were told to take him to A and E were after many tests and examinations he was finally diagnosed with Pyloric Stenosis (after being told it was reflux) his gas levels were so high if left any longer it would have been to late and could have been fatal ! He was in hospital for 5 days and had an operation to loosen the muscles around the tube leading too his bowels as this was what was causing the problem. It sometimes goes unseen a the symptoms r very much like reflux so i just wanted to let people know that if they see these signs n symptoms please get DC assessed even if its nothing . Its common in first born boys hod knows what would have happened if nobody had listened to me x

Khalees we were lucky in a sense. I took ds to the gp and sent to the children's ward on Monday late afternoon and were transferred to LRI Tuesday morning. Ds had the op weds about 12. So it was only Tues morning till a few hours after the op for ds not eating. Cant imagine how awful for 8 days of no feeding :(
I didn't realise they specialised there, i just thought our hospital was rubbish. Ds was in the ambulance with blue lights all the way there, dh went with him whilst I drove. It took ages but i got there before them. I really wished dh drove that day as I just wanted to be with ds.

Once DS1 was diagnosed, we couldn't feed him but he was put on a drip so he wasn't 'starving' iyswim so I don't remember it being an issue.

We had to transfer to a nearby children's hospital as it was the only one that did the operation in the region - had to transfer by ambulance but not on blue lights but we may have done some of the journey on blue lights to get through traffic as I knew the ambulance staff

Well he wasnt starving as he was on drip but he was crying like he was starving and it was horrible x

I think we were very lucky as DS1 was a very placid baby who rarely cried anyway (even though I suspect he must have spent his early days hungry as he had very little food going in) so he never really cried in hospital either.

I just hated seeing him lying in the big hospital cot (he was still in his small cosy moses basket at home) - just awful Sad

We ended up getting a hotel room in a Premier Inn a few miles away from the hospital as only one of us could stay in the hospital at night!

rachi1990xx · 09/04/2013 21:56

My DS never cried once until thr NG tube he was even smiling at us as he went for op x my dp was allowed to stay 1st night as he was diagnosed quite late on the fri night and i was a complete mess but wen we moved to childrens on the sat nyte DP had to leave at night n i was devastated was really a time wen i needed him with me x

YY to the big cot ceebee. He went down for surgery on an adult stretcher-you could barely see him on it.

rachi1990xx · 09/04/2013 22:02

Sparkling DS was taken down on a neonate cot n put on a adult stretcher/bed in anesthetic room n i wanted to cry he looked so small n wen they were puttin him under he was fighting it n looking at me for help i never want to go thru that again xxx

Rachi that's what ds was like crying like he was starving. Much worse during the night.
The blue lights did seem overly dramatic but it is a bit of a trek so guessing they didn't want to take very long without blue lights.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 10/04/2013 08:18

Ds was on a bed cot thing. I walked down with him as only one was allowed.
Dh and I shared a single bed on the ward in ds's room. They didn't feed us obviously though. I didn't realise how lucky we were to be together.

ceebeegeebies · 10/04/2013 08:42

Isn't it funny how all our experiences are completely different!

We didn't even get a bed in the hospital - we had a reclining chair next to DS1's cot. He was in a shared ward with about 10 other children so nights were not quiet and the chair was not comfortable so sleep was very difficult!

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2013 08:47

Our experience was awful for other reasons. There were no cots in the general ward so DS2 ended up on the 'heart' ward. Cots of very sick babies some had been there a long time, and some who had slim chances of pulling through. Sad

I felt guilty because I knew DS2 would come back from his Op and would be fine and would be going home. When he came back on the big stretcher one of the other parents ran over in case it was her baby coming back from his heart Op. Sad

DH stayed overnight and the parents of the babies with heart problems went out for a meal, because DH promised to be there of anything happened and get in touch. Sad

ceebeegeebies · 10/04/2013 08:55

Sparkling that is awful - makes you realise how lucky we were that it was a straightforward op.

Ours was a completely mixed ward so all sorts of problems. I remember in the bed next to ours was a toddler (maybe 3 years old) waiting for some operation but he wasn't ill iyswim. The parents had obviously had to starve him since the morning and he didn't go in to his operation until late afternoon and he was so distraught all day because he was so hungry and confused as to why his parents wouldn't feed him Sad

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2013 08:59

Yes ceebee because the other parents assumed DS2 was in because of his heart too. VV awkward and sad.

rachi1990xx · 10/04/2013 09:18

We were both allowed to go dwn with him but i think they gave up arguing wiv me about anything x we had blue lights too must be procedure with babies x the thing that upset me was they kept trying to get me to leave n go home like i was going to leave my poorly confused 5 w/o alone x
