What to do for poorly 10 month old

My DD has had a temperature hovering around 38.5 for most of the day. Not scary high but still a high temp. She's very dozy, falling asleep a lot and generally very lethargic. She also has been breathing quite fast at around 60 resp per minute. Her cry has changed and is not one I've heard before. Almost like a cat meowing, very high and quite a whiney but half hearted noise. I've given calpol. She is BF and has had her usual feeds and not really accepted more than a minute or 2 if I offer extra. All day she's only taken a few little sips of water and had no solids. She's generally just not herself at all.

Does it sound like just a little bug or something to call out of hours about? Or am I being a tad PFB?!

Thank you.

Did the capol bring the temp down?

IShallCallYouSquishy · 23/03/2013 18:30

It came down from 38.5 to 38.2 but was back up to 38.4 by the time the next dose was due. So yes, reduced it a little.

TBH the fast respiratory rate, whiney cry, sleepiness and poor fluid intake needs assessed tonight. These factors are more concerning than the temperature alone.

I would definitely call OOH/NHS direct and get her seen tonight. It sounds like she is not very well at all.

Call them now. Smile

It probably is just a virus (sounds like it could be bronchiolitis?) but given her age and the fact your worried call OOH and see what they say.

Do you have any iprobrufen?

ilovepowerhoop · 23/03/2013 18:35

if you find calpol isnt working effectively then you could alternate it with ibuprofen e.g. calprofen or nurofen (my 2 like the nurofen best)

Sorry, posted too soon.

Meant to say it will put your mind at rest and the Doctors are more than happy to see a poorly baby.

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 23/03/2013 18:42

Poor baby. My DS (9 mo) is like this at the moment, with vomiting as well. I took him to GP on Thursday and it turned out to be a chest infection.

I'd take yours to Dr, if I were you.

ZipItShrimpy · 23/03/2013 20:24

Hope you DD is being seen now.

Frogstomp2299 · 23/03/2013 20:37

Yes def call now my d's had this a few Wks ago it happened to be only a virus but they said the symptoms were similar to meningitis ( not to scare u, but u can't be too careful)

IShallCallYouSquishy · 23/03/2013 21:58

Thank you for all your help. NHS direct weren't the most helpful! However after a lukewarm bath my DD's temp came down a bit and over the course of the evening her respiratory rate is nearer normal. She's still not had a huge amount of fluids but got her to take a breast feeds and she fell asleep. On the advice of NHS direct I'm just keeping an eye on her. My own common sense and intuition isn't as worried now her temp is coming down and breathing is getting normal. Even though she's not had one in months, I'm going to give her a dream feed to keep her fluids up. Think I'll be sleeping in her room though out of paranoid mummy-ness!

I'm surprised they didn't want to see her! Keep a very close eye on her tonight and if she gets worse again I personally would at a minimum phone NHS direct back or even take her to A&E. Her symptoms from earlier were similar to that of meningitis. If you do phone NHS direct back be sure to tell them about the fast breathing, drowsiness, lack of fluids etc and the strange crying.

Better to be extra careful, especially when she is too small to tell you if her head hurts etc.

Hope she and you are ok. Flowers

IShallCallYouSquishy · 23/03/2013 23:05

I thought I'd have to take her somewhere too but I guess she isn't that bad. I'm giving her a dream feed now so hopefully she will take a reasonable amount.
I had her completely stripped off earlier and checked every millimetre of her for any rash or spots.

To be honest I would happily stay in this chair cuddling her all night while she sleeps but I know that's not realistic. Will be keeping a close eye on her all night though.

How is she today?

IShallCallYouSquishy · 24/03/2013 20:51

Her temperature has been up and down all day, from anywhere completely normal to 38.9. Her breathing rate is completely normal though and when she cries its just her tired/poorly cry. Like any poorly baby all she's really wanted are lots of cuddles and to sleep. After a little nap she'll be alert and a bit playful for 10 minutes or so but then it's straight back to head on my chest.

I'm just keeping her calpol-ed and monitored.
