11 month old and constipation

11 month old dd is constipated. Her poo is hard and she is having great difficulty passing any at all. When she strains she gets extremely distressed and doesn't produce anything.

At the moment she has a large hard poo in her rectum that she cannot pass and I would imagine it is blocking anything else from coming out which will also make subsequent poos hard and large iyswim. I have tried to help her pass it by trying to break it up a bit but she became so distressed I had to stop. I am also worried I will hurt her.

I have tried everything I can think of to help her, loads of fruit and veg, loads of fluids, diluted orange juice etc. This has been going on for 4 days now, completely out of the blue I haven't changed her diet or routine at all I am at a loss as to what to do next and am worried. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Tia

I have had this with my dd, I find shreddies for breakfast keeps things moving, but as for the current stuck poo, can you see it?

If so try gently pushing the back of her anus (assuming she's on her back, push at the bottom of the opening) This has helped dd on more than one occasion.

If she hasn't passed it by morning, take her to the GP, they can give her a gycerin (sp?) suppository which will get things moving.

I can see it. Thankfully she is asleep now but i will try that next time she wakes. It must be so uncomfortable.

Thank you for the advice Smile

You have my sympathies.

My 2yo DD suffered terribly from constipation from only a few months old, and it was so distressing to see. And worse for her.
Like you, i tried everything - fruit juice, fruit & veg, water, massage, 'bicycling' her legs etc, but the only thing that seems to work for her is movicol prescribed by the GP.

How are things now OP? I hope your dd is more comfortable.

glycerin suppository from the pharmacy, you don't need the gp, they have infant sized ones. if she has ongoing constipation problems, you probably should see your gp, so she doesn't develop a withholding habit. dd2 is 15 months and had a tendency to be constipated, we used movicol for a few months and now she is walking and it seems to be resolving itself (she has also developed a liking for dried apricots, which helps.

hope you can work it out.
