How on earth to get a wee sample from an 11 month old??

I had ds diagnosed with tonsillitis this morning, and quite a bad case poor thing :( Along with that is the question of wether he has a urine infection, as his wee smells so bad. He's been prescribed antibiotics for his throat, but the doctor needs a wee sample as apparently he may need a kidney scan if his wee throws up anything unexpected. Now he is my third so I shoudl be past worrying about throwaway comments from a doctor, but why would an ultrasound be needed? Is it because he's a boy? My dd has had a wee infection and just needed antibiotics. Am getting worried since the GP did poke ds's abdomen quite a bit, I'm worried he felt something untoward.
But my problem is, I cannot get ds to wee Confused The doctor said babies should wee every 15 minutes. Not so. I've had him stripped off sat over a bowl at the GPs suggestion, perched on ds's old potty which is HUGE, and finally sat on my lap on a towel with his willy aimed into the pot. Nothing. Nada. He has gone on wee strike. I just want to get the sample sent off so if anything is wrong it can get sorted, and if it's not then I can stop worrying. Should I just go back tomorrow and say I can't get a sample? I vaguely remember ds1 being given a stick on bag for something that escapes me now, I don't think we ever did use it. Is that an option? How are you meant to get a wee sample from a baby??

Put a clean sanitary towel inside their nappy, keep checking, then squeeze it into the pot when they've wee'd!

pramdunce · 21/03/2013 19:56

Surely that won't work potter? I've seen the adverts with the fancy pants blue beads adsorbing everything. It might work with a really cheapo kind? I might even have some maternity pads kicking around somewhere if that'd work. Good idea. The frustrating thing is, I kept him nappyless virtually all afternoon. I put his nappy on to run up the stairs with him, I take it off again and it's full. So I do think he'd rather wee in his nappy.

Try putting his feet into cold water while positioned with sterile pot.

Squeezing the urine out of something will not result in a sterile, uncontaminated sample so please don't waste your time doing that.

If you are local to North Dorset then I have some sticky collection bags that you attach around testicles and penis to catch the wee.

We have to get samples regularly and it's just patience.

GP gave me a stick on bag for baby. If your doc wants a sample, he should give you one of those. Horrible when you have to peel it off their skin though.

Squinkie · 21/03/2013 20:00

Give him a big drink then go upstairs and run the bath. Strip him down to nappy and hold him standing in the water as it runs. I eventually managed with a flannel in the nappy. Good luck!

brainonastick · 21/03/2013 20:06

Put something he loves on tv (in the night garden worked for me when I had to do this with dd2).

Strip both of you off below the waist (ok, you can keep your pants on).

Put a mat down on the floor, as big as you like, and get a potty or a wide/shallow bowl.

Give him a drink of something obscenely sugary which he will gulp down. Sit down on the mat, with him on your lap and the potty/bowl underneath if you can, and watch tv for 10-20mins.

At the first hint of a tinkle, make sure the bowl is in the right place.

If not...well, that's why you're sitting on a mat with practically no clothes on.

Good luck, god bless.

What HDEE says, there's no point if the sample is contaminated.

dd1 had a wee infection at 11 months, then they did a series of scans/ct scan on her, we were told it was routine practice in case of UTIs in under ones.

Turned out she had a rhenal reflux, she was put on prophilactic abs for a few years and eventually grew out of it.

Gales · 21/03/2013 20:16

When DS2 had to give a sample as a baby the GP gave me a sort of plastic bag that fitted over his willy. Slipped it over, put the nappy back on and 30 mins later bag was full! Probably the one you remember OP!

pramdunce · 21/03/2013 20:17

I sat through 4 skyplussed Night Gardens! At least it kept him still. Good to know a scan would be standard, thank you. Perhaps he's not drinking enough. He's been bfing a lot but it obviously hurts him to swallow so he's stpooing after a few gulps. I actually feel uncomfortably full of milk :( I'll stop by the surgery for a bag tomorrow then. Thanks all

Your poor wee boy, tonsillitis in a baby must be horrendous Sad

It takes aaaaages to get a wee sample Grin. I think I posted on your other thread briefly...doc will want to scan his kidneys to see if uti has caused any damage to them and to rule out a physiological reason for the uti, as it's seemingly not common for a boy to get a uti.

I can only tell you my experience...ds had uti, ultrasound revealed one kidney larger than the other and some evidence of scarring on the 'bad' kidney (after only one uti). Kidney Reflux was suspected and eventually confirmed after many other horrid tests. Currently waiting on appointment for camera up willie fortunately ds is as fit as a fiddle and you wouldn't know there was anything wrong.

Persevere with getting a sample, really important that uti is ruled out/investigated as needs be.

Clean cotton wool balls inside nappy then squeeze out the sample.
That's how I used to do get ds2 numerous samples

Snazzynewyear · 21/03/2013 20:23

Had to do this in kids' A and E once while abroad with DS and did it the hard way - they gave us a cup and told us to wait and watch! We missed the first one! Took about two hours.. Hope the GP can help with one of the bags and that your DS is ok in the end.

brainonastick · 21/03/2013 20:24

Sorry OP, not very useful then! Ive just seen your other thread, sounds like you've both had a horrible week Sad. Could you attach a freezer bag with some medical tape?

pramdunce · 21/03/2013 20:43

Brain, it's been a terrible week. Dd want back to school yesterday, but ds just doesn't seem to be improving :( I don't have medical tape, I think I threw it out in an effort to clean out the medicine cabinet when we moved. I daren't try to stick anything to his bits. I think I'll give it a try with the bath first thing, and just go and get the bags.

We put a sanitary towel type pad in DS nappy while in hospital for a wee sample, or try cotton wool balls.
Poor baby, hope he gets better soon

HDEE · 22/03/2013 07:15

Good luck trying to get a bag. We had awful trouble. The hospital wouldn't give the out, the GP doesn't have the to give out, no chemist stocked them. In the end, we had to buy the off the Internet, they cost around £2 per bag!

Charmingbaker · 22/03/2013 07:26

My DS had to do a wee sample last year. Initially the GP gave us the bag but the results from that were 'inconclusive' apparently they are prone to cross contamination. We had to do it again straight into a sample pot. It was a 2 man job, he sat on my knee nappyless whilst DH had the pot ready (lots of towels down!) and we gave him lots of weak juice to drink. Eventually caught some and this time the sample was sterile and the results came back all clear.

pramdunce · 22/03/2013 09:29

Got one from the receptionist, now just to wait. It's really going to hurt taking it off though
