Severe nappy rash in 1 year old

The title pretty much covers it really but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help my Dd as at present she is in such pain she is crying hysterically at each nappy change and it's gut wrenching.

I think it's teething related as when younger she didn't have any problems, at the sight of tenderness we'd pop some Metanium on and in a few hours the redness would subside, but this bout is relentless.

Broken, inflamed skin which has spots that the HV thought could be thrush, cream prescribed and alternated that with Sudocreme or Bepanthen. Still no better really after 2 weeks and must if anything be getting worse as on an evening my dd even struggles to sit or stand as its obviously chaffing/hurting her. Another trip to the Drs later (who didn't look at the affected area?!?) but this time prescribed Daktozin steroid cream and some castor oil cream. 3 days later and I'm not seeing any improvement. Am I expecting too much too soon?!

I do give my Dd nappy free time as much as possible (much to my carpets displeasure!!) and we use Oilatum in her bath so nothing too strong but she is still in so much pain.

Am I missing anything anybody else does or has tried?! Any advice appreciated?!

Try removing the cream with olive oil rather than wipes or water as it'll stop the skin drying out.

My SIL who is a paediatric nurse told me in SCBU if baby has severe nappy rash and metatanium isn't working they use orabase.

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't thought about oil for cleaning up, definitely worth a try.

I'm also having a search for the cream thanks, can't order a free sample off my stupid phone!?

I thought about that too, I've used Little Angels nappies for a while which have been ok but actually splashed out on some Pampers Baby Dry and since using them it's been worse than ever. May be a coincidence but I've gone back to LA's again to see if that helps?!

My doctor sister told me to try a bit of egg white (raw) painted on the sore bits. Helped both of my kids when bad. I have used bepanthen at every nappy change and each DC only had nappy rash once or twice.

Sunny20 · 21/03/2013 22:41

My daughter seems to get very sore if she wears pampers baby dry too but in little angels she's fine. If I was you I'd go back to drs tomorrow and make sure the dr examines your daughter as its not fair on the poor little thing. It mite just be trial and error to see which cream works best, hope you manage to get it sorted soon

karenflower · 21/03/2013 22:44

I have had to use daktarin for thrush based nappy rash in the past

Also welda google it was brilliant for my DS2 with DS1 metanium worked well

Mintyy · 21/03/2013 22:45

On of my dc had a terrible reaction to a particular brand of nappies (can't remember which, unfortunately) but the problems cleared up when we tried a different type. We never had a problem which couldn't be cured by this or metanium.

Poppins27 · 21/03/2013 22:49

I have totally relied on Metanium until now and it's been a godsend, might try it again now she's back in her regular nappies?!

It really is horrid seeing her in so much pain, thanks for all the help and suggestions. Never heard of using egg whites before, certainly new to that one but will try anything!!

DS2 has had quite bad nappy rash recently, currently it is not quite so severe but still with some broken, sore skin. I took him to the Dr and got Timodene cream which I found works well. It isn't an instant cure, but it did heal the broken skin after a few days when the over-the-counter stuff only tackled the redness.

Good luck, it is miserable for them and for you.

MousyMouse · 21/03/2013 22:57

you could try a chamomile bath. use a handfull of (chamomie) tea bags to make very strong tea and put it in the bath water.
I also used cooled down chamomile tea + flannel to wash baby's bottom when it was really bad.
poor thing, hope it is better soon.

My Go To remedy for nasty nappy rash was always whipped up egg white, straight from the fridge; it soothes, and if left for a bit, forms an impervious barrier. Even the nastiest nappy rash with my lot would clear up within hours. I was Hmm when my sister shared this knowledge with me, but was utterly gobsmacked by how effective it actually is!

My DD was the worst, and we found by a lot of trial and error that it was wipes that caused her problems. After using doublebase and tissues for months, we discovered that Aldi wipes were the only thing that kept her skin rash free.

Poppins27 · 22/03/2013 07:04

That's interesting Daisy as I had bought the Little Angels wipes too to try when my usuals had run out, which again was around the time all this started. I did buy my usual brand again on Tuesday so hopefully a combination of everything were trying will help.

And you're right, my Dd can go from looking fairly symptom free to having chaffed looking sores between 1 nappy change.

I think I'll go raid the fridge for some eggs....this is something I never imagined I'd be doing!! Haha

Have you tried her on the toilet yet? I know she is probably too young to train ( have 1 year old also), but we have been putting him on the toilet at each change ( ie before new nappy on), and he has been using the toilet often. It means that although he is in nappies all day, a % of wee/poo is going straight into toilet and therefore he is dryer etc inside nappy. I'm sure yours does it too but I would put on a clean nappy and he would poo in 5 mins! So I'm sure he wees straight away also.

It just started out with say on toilet before bath time, and now atosy changes, but he seems happy with it and I'm hoping when he's a hit older in the summer maybe, that it will also be an easy transition to training ( as already knows toilet= attempt to go)

Poppins27 · 22/03/2013 07:55

No I have to admit that has not even entered my head yet?! She only turned 1 last week so potty/toilet training seemed like something to contend with in the future. Although I absolutely see what you mean, I could start trying at bath time also and see what happens?!

Yes he was probably 14 months when we started ( brother was 2 and trained so he wanted to join also!)

My ds had awful nappy rash, lasted about 6 WeeksSad and they gave me manuka honey to try. Worked eventually but he got it again and I used cavlon spray, it cleared up in about 3 days. You can buy it in the chemist. I also used honey and chamomile tea on a cloth instead of wipes. Hope it clears up soon.
