Does Slapped Cheek cause vomitting??

Hi Guys

Slapped cheek has been going around my DD nursery...I have two older DS's aswell but have never experience slapped cheek with any of them so am new to this one.

About a week ago my DD came up in a red rash on her arms and legs and I thought it was her eczema flaring up so I caked her in epederm for a few days and it seemed to settle down. I did not link it to slapped cheek as her cheeks are always naturally pink as she gets eczema flare ups there sometimes in the form of red dry skin. So I just put it down to that.

On Tuesday at 3.30pm ish I got a call from the childminder telling me my DD had been violently sick everywhere and could I come and collect her...when I went to collect her Childminder told me Izzy had slapped cheek as she saw the rash on her arms and legs when she changed her out of her sicky clothes into her spare clothes from her bag.

I took her home and she vomitted roughly every 10 to 20 minutes for the rest of the evening and couldn't keep anything down, including fluids or medicine, (Ibuprofen as running a fever of 37.2). She slept in with me that night and the next day, Wednesday, she seemed to pick up. She ate breakfast at about 6.30am but then vomitted it back up at around 10.30am, she was keeping fluids down and was up and about alot more but still lethargic compared to normal.

This morning she has started vomitting again and bringing up most things, but is managing to keep fluids down for longer now, but has gone very lethargic again and is now sleeping on the sofa.

Has anyone got any experience of slapped cheek who can tell me if this sounds typical of the virus? I dont want to drag her out to the doctors if I dont need to when she feels this poorly and risk spreading the virus about if its not necessary...eg if these symptoms are normal and we just have to wait it out.

Thanks for your help guys.

Don't know about slapped cheek, but that sounds like norovirus. The vomiting can last a week in very little ones, DD was very lethargic for the first few days of it. I was told as long as they are keeping fluids down for 15 mins, they will avoid dehydration, but do keep checking. Ring NHS direct if you are worried

For one of mine temperature causes vomitting, and with slapped cheek they can often have a high temperature.

BeaWheesht · 21/03/2013 09:59

Sounds like noro to me too.

Ds had slapped cheek and no vomiting.

Incidentally 372 isn't really a fever at all so I'd leave her with no meds as that may upset her tummy further

Oh..I checked on google for fever rates and it says 37.2 is classed as fever...although not in the high end??

Ok will keep on with fluids, she is keeping it down for longer then 15 minutes at the moment, will how she goes rest of day...cheers for your help guys. xx

Sorry should clarify...I took DDs temperature under the arm, which makes 37.2 a fever as you add .5 to get core temp which makes it 37.7....probably where confusion coming from. :) xx

37.7 is barely a fever. I wouldn't medicate for anything under 38.2 unless in pain etc

HerNibs1980 · 21/03/2013 13:28

Ok well on the guidelines I've been finding online 37.7 is classed as a fever. Plus she's burning to touch. So will keep giving Ibuprofen as she seems to be keeping it down now. Thank you for your help though. :) xx

If she's keeping it down then fine although calpol would be better on an empty stomach tbh.

Do you know what her base temp is? For example 377 would definitely indicate something with my ds as his base temp is around 36 but with my dd anything up to 378 is her normal temp.

HerNibs1980 · 21/03/2013 17:34

Unfortunately I dont have any calpol in the house and not dragging her out up the pharmacy when I've got plenty of Ibuprofen, plus this link suggests Ibuprofen for fever. But my question regarding the vomitting has been settled now though so its all good. :) xx

Could it be scarlet fever? There has been an outbreak at my DS1's school and apparently local GPs are saying that there are cases around where they haven't seen any for a few years.

HerNibs1980 · 22/03/2013 13:39

Oh I dont know... :O Will have to google symptoms of scarlet fever, just as Slapped Cheek has been going round her nursery and the childminder said thats what it looked like I just put it down to that...will have a look hun..hadn't thought of that. :( xxx

I thought scarlet fever too - my DS is just back from docs - am convinced he has it, doctor wasn't sure Hmm he has tonsilitis though so got antibiotics anyway.

Ibuprofen can make for a sore tummy on no food :(
