DD is 27 weeks. Diagnosed silent reflux. Eczema.

She has had diarrhoea for 8 days. It's either basically just water or very green and slimy/mucousy. She was pooing every 2/3 hours but feeding normally. Formula and one meal of solids - BLW.

Saw GP on Monday and she took samples - we should hear by the end of the week if there is a viral or bacterial infection.

She has slept way more than usual today. Formula down to 24oz in 24 hours - normally 36-40oz. We have given tap water in a cup throughout the day. Nappies are still wet. She is now pooing every hour.

What should we do? Is this worrying anyone else?

It sounds like its getting worse - I'd call nhs direct or out of hours tonight.

stargirl1701 · 19/03/2013 22:55

We're not over-reacting? The last time we attending OOHs the GP was very dismissive. DD hadn't fed for 18 hours and we'd had no wet nappies for 12. She sent is away with some syringes to feed 6oz of formula through. It was totally ridiculous.

I'd get her seen too.

Also don't worry about overreacting. I'd rather overreact 10 times than miss something important once.

We left it overnight. She seems well in herself. Took 4oz when we woke her at 7am. No poo since 10pm last night till after her bottle at 7am. Maybe the worst is over?

She has fed more today. 28oz. Fewer poo nappies. Thank you all.

Update.

We've just been to our local A&E as DD's temp was above 39 degrees with Calpol. They were able to access the results of the samples taken by the GP last Monday. DD has a gastrointestinal virus. If she gets any worse we have to go to Paediatrics at the regional teaching hospital.

with eczema and reflux, have they considered a cow's milk allergy?

DS had this and it made him very prone to gastro bugs followed by temp lactose intolerance.

stargirl1701 · 23/03/2013 15:06

GP says no. HV says yes.

We have a paediatric consultant appt on the 3rd April and we plan to bring up CMPI with that doctor.

On what basis does GP say no?!? Probably doesn't want to prescribe £££ hypo formula I bet....

Hope the paed is more informed.....

stargirl1701 · 23/03/2013 16:08

The GPs have been pretty useless. When she refused to feed for 18 hours one of them suggested we syringe her feed into her. I was gobsmacked. 6oz of milk through a 5ml syringe. Into a baby who hates syringes because she gets one filled with medication 3x a day. Words failed me, tbh.

Roll on the paeds appt!

Is she on ranitidine, then?? Poor wee mite. I bet you the paed will take one look at her and prescribe a hypo milk. DS also had feeding refusal on account of reflux and milk allergy, so I know how you feel.

Did you know you can buy hypo milk over the counter? .g., aptamil pepti (that's what DS had). It's £££ but if you did a short trial and it had an effect then that would be great evidence to take along to your paed. If it does nothing, keep quiet about it and ask paed to prescribe an elemental milk like neocate for a trial period (far too expensive to buy OTC - over £30 a tiny tin).

Obviously, you'd need to exclude all milk and milk products from weaning foods too...

stargirl1701 · 23/03/2013 22:18

I didn't know you could buy hypo milk over the counter, thanks. She is on Ranitidine. I haven't used any dairy solids at all. I didn't want to take the risk.

Yes, you usually have to order it in (I used to get it through Boots) but it comes the next day - at least it did at my local branch.

Pepti (fairly palatable) is about £20 a can I think, Nutramigen AA and Neocate are ++++ than that, and also taste absolutely disgusting. Having said that, some really allergic children can only tolerate the more expensive and completely artificial feeds (e.g., neocate).
