Ds (6) foreskin problems

My ds 6yrs has what my dh seems to think is too tight a foreskin. I'm know he is my son but it sort of weirds me out thinking about his little bits...but anyway. We have taken him to gp who gave him hydrocortisone cream and told him to "fiddle with it in the bath" and said to me to bring him back if it gets worse??? Ds says it doesn't hurt but it does look quite red and sore sometimes. It's been 6 mths now and defo no better. Also ds aim into the toilet isn't great. Probably an effect
Would you take him back to Gp? What about asking for a surgical procedure?

My DS 6 has similar issues, and I'm interested in replies, I'm very anti surgery though

My friend's son has just had surgery to sort this problem out - it was a very quick op and he was back at school after 2 days and not had any problems. His friend also had the op but when he was much younger. Clearly it's a common problem and the op is very simple. Sorry that I can't offer actual personal advice as it's a friend and I don't like to ask too much info about her 14 yr old son's penis!!

My son had this and was circumcised. It was day surgery and he was fine afterwards. I was told it's better to have the op when they are younger so I would take him back to the GP.

According to frequent reports on MN, the steroid cream rarely works.

Circumcision is a lifetime solution to any foreskin problems; tightness (phimosis) and paraphimosis which is when the foreskin has been retracted and can't be returned. It prevents infections like UTIs and balanitis. It's also low maintenance personal hygiene as there is no longer a foreskin cavity to harbour infections. The exposed penis head is atomically washed at every shower or bath - eliminating the need to retract for this purpose - something which some males often neglect.

Circumcision will certainly improve your son's aim at the toilet providing you encourage him to perfect it! LOL! :-D

My DS now 9 has had similar problems. He's had repeated Balanitis. The cream did work for us, but the foreskin got tighter again. We used the cream again and haven't had so many problems.
I'm not convinced its resolved but so far he's had no more Balanitis. If he didn't have ASD we would have put him in for circumscision but we didn't feel he would be able to cope well with the procedure.

My DS was 6 when we first sought advice from the GP - he was never given the cream to try, I don't know why. Anyway, we continued to get him to try to retract the skin but it didn't improve, but it was three years before we took him back to the doctors. He is now 9, and was circumcised last month, and has made a good recovery. My advice to you would be to return to the GP to see what they recommend, but it may still be a case of 'wait and see' at this stage.

Skullnbones · 22/03/2013 15:58

We are at the "wait and see stage ". Ds has had 2 bad infections because of this. Doc is anti surgery and says he may well "grow out of it". I assume he means quite literally. If it doesn't loosen up then he will he referred. We were told to make him pull the foreskin back as much as he could so he could give it a good clean in the bath..this has helped a lot and it doesn't get as red anymore (which was caused by urine getting trapped under his foreskin). He also sometime pees squint because of it!! Good luck. But if in doubt get to the gp

hermioneweasley · 22/03/2013 16:04

DS's foreskin got so tight he was screaming and convulsing in pain when he weed. He was circumcised - not nice but it was instant and permanent relief.

Thanks for all your thoughts. Think we may head back to Gp

DS1 was the same and we saw a surgeon when he was 9.
He said that the current thinking was that 99% of problems were resolved with puberty and most surgery was unnecessary.

He was right.
