Could this be scarlet fever?

Dd started with a temp and sore throat

This was followed up with a rash which showed up on Sunday evening, all over her back, chest and top of legs

Temp hovering around 39 but does come down slightly with calpol

Spoke to nurse this morning and was told virus, nothing to be done, ring for appt Friday if no better

But...

Dd hasn't had her mmr as she has a number of allergies, had a massive eczema flare up and was being tested for autoimmune disorder when it was due so was advised against it

I'm worried as obviously she was at school last week, possibility of coming into contact with pregnant ladies quite high

Should I ignore the nurse and try and get her in at the docs tomorrow?

What is the rash like? Scarlet fever is quite distinctive - google it.

Has she come into contact with anyone with scarlet fever?

chickensaladagain · 18/03/2013 20:31

It's pink and raised, a bit like heat rash but not ( and yes I know that makes no sense )

Check her tongue, scarlet fever usually causes 'strawberry tongue', bright red and the taste bugs swell and look like the seeds. It's a notifiable disease and needs treatment with antibiotics to prevent complications. The GP will take a mouthswab just to confirm but the tongue is a dead give away. Also the rash feels a bit sandpapery and the skin will sometimes dry and flake off.

MMR doesn't protect against scarlet fever. Could it be measles, usually as well as rash have a cough and sore eyes ?

chickensaladagain · 18/03/2013 20:44

Doh, getting it mixed up with German measles

Chicken salad, that rash sounds like it could be scarlet fever, but would really recommend you google it as there are some very clear images of its very distinctive rash.

Has she got hot bright red cheeks aswell as the body rash?

It could be slapped cheek which DS is just getting over along with a huge amount of his school.

Poor kid, if it is. I remember having it at age 15 - felt so rough. Doc tried to fob my mum off saying it was a reaction to penicillin!

Hope she feels better quickly.

Viral rash? If it is, it will be gone in few days.

Exact same thing happened to my DS (5) a few months ago. dr diagnosed scarlet fever but swabs proved it not to be. Was viral rash.
