Chicken pox??

Dd has a slight temperature, a red rash around her mouth and neck, half a dozen white spots with red skin around them that seem to fade and come back bigger. She now has a patch of 5 spots on her arm.

We have done the glass test and no worries there, my question is, does this sound like chicken pox, when will we know it is and what do I do???

If they have a tiny white bit, or blister to them, it probably is. Think my Dd started with a handful just under her collar line and then they started to spread over the next day or so I think.

You'll know it's definitely CP when the rash looks like fluid filled blisters. Not a lot you can do until then unfortunately.

Also, how old is your DD, is she at school or in childcare? We were told by the GP that CP was contagious whilst ever new spots were appearing, but nursery wouldn't have her back until all spots were fully scabbed over. We found a liquid antihistamine good for the itching and also did the porridge oats in a sock in the bath thing! Lots of fluids and calpol too I think if there's a temperature. Good luck!

Thanks folks, dd is 18 months. Temperature is 36.9 (sneaky check while she sleeps) and she had Calpol before bed.

The first spots are on hers collar so that adds up.

I am supposed to be going on the train with dd on Thursday to pick up an elderly relative I'm thinking that will be out of the question if it is?

Does calmamile (sp??) lotion still work in the bath to relieve itching?

If pox suspected then deffo no train journeys or creche :(. It can be really serious if it is passed on to immunocompromised individuals.

I think it is commoner for the pox to start on scalp or behind ears. Also it is more usual to get papules rather than a rash.

Could it be hand, foot and mouth?

narmada · 18/03/2013 21:06

Ps if it is the pox I think she is probably old enough for piriton, which is more effective at relieving itching than calamine ( and may also help sleep :) )

Lurkymclurker · 18/03/2013 21:20

Thanks Narmada,

We have a chemist at the end of the road so I can pop there tomorrow (after a phone call to check) and get piriton. Thanks for that tip!

She has had hand, foot and mouth before and it was similar but this is different in that she has marks on her body and none on her hands or feet. I will have another check tomorrow - dont want to turn the light on to check but have been temping every hour

Good idea re. pharmacy.

Is it a rash, or discrete spots?

Lurkymclurker · 19/03/2013 02:45

Can I say both? A rash on her face around her chin, distinct spots on her neck/collar area and on her arm/chest

Dp is home with her now (I am at work) her temp was normal at 11pm

Waiting for the morning when I can get a good look at her and see if the spots have vanished or not.

The rash might be unrelated? Hope she's feeling ok this morning.
