Please talk to me about nappy rash.

DS (8 months) has had a red, sore looking, sometimes weeping and bleeding bottom for about 4-5 weeks now. Prior to this, a single application of metanium when it first appeared had always done the trick.

Pharmacist suggested canestan so I've been using that for a couple of weeks. GP saw it a week or so ago and said it looked okay and just to carry on with the canestan.

It's worse than ever now, really sore and bleeding. Any ideas what to try?

My ds gets terrible nappy rash too, it's so distressing to see isn't it?

I find bepanthen works well, it's thick like dairylea (!) and seems to work well overnight.

Sadly I think some bottoms are just prone to it.

barleysugar · 17/03/2013 18:11

Oh and forgot to say, use baby oil to clean the bottom instead of wipes, it's far less irritating but cleans the poo off like magic.

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 17/03/2013 18:46

I have tried Bepanthan, when the metanium stopped working. It won't seem to 'stick' to the raw weeping bits.

Oh I hate it!

Will try oil though for cleaning bottom.

Hate the nappy rash I mean, not the cream!

Try and let some air into it, dd naps in her buggy so when her nappy rash is bad she naps without a nappy on and an absorbent bed pad thing underneath her bum. Helps a lot, I use metanium too, it works the best for us anyway. Hope it clears up soon, It breaks my heart when dd has it bad.

Dd2 got in a real pickle with hers. Tried all the over the counter stuff but evetually ended up with a prescription for a triple antibiotic/antifungal/ steroid cream, plus epaderm which we used as a barrier all the time.
As much nappy free time as possible, no baby wipes, no smellies in the bath and potty train asap (realise that the last is a bit optimistic with 8m old!)

Ooouucch! Your poor DS Hmm DD used to get a bad teething rash & I found the best thing was to wash her bottom in lukewarm water after any wee/poo - ideally a dunk but otherwise with very wet cotton wool. Pat dry a little. Plus nappy off as much as possible. If out & about or for sleep I'd let the skin dry off then apply metanium.
Good luck

Thanks. All good advice. I feel like I'm doing all these things though. Except perhaps not enough nappy free time so I'll increase that.

Might need some prescription cream of some kind I think.

My baby had the most horrendous nappy rash that lingered for months. I was back and forth to the GP and they eventually prescribed some super strong cream which finally shifted it.

Sounds like you're doing everything you can at home. It's just horrid isn't it? The only other thing I found helpful was cutting citrus fruit and raw tomatoes from her diet.

Good luck and I hope it clears up soon.

Only thing that worked for my dd3 was "sprilon" spray was very expensive but is for bedsores - works amazingly and you only need a very very thin layer so I think the skin still gets to breath. We got it on prescription too but bought it when we ran out one time as it was so good.
