Conjunctivitis - eye drop nightmare

MumH2010 · 17/03/2013 08:25

My 2 yo has conjunctivitis, but we are finding it really difficult to administer his eye drops. At first he was ok with them, we pretended to give them to his toys etc. but now it has become a battle and he keeps his eyes firmly shut, so I don't think they are working now as this will be the 4th day of him having it. Does anyone know any tricks or is there a different product I should be asking for other than drops?

Don't bother. Most GPs don't suggest using them any more. This is because conjunctivitis doesn't really get better any quicker even if you use them (it will get better on its own anyway) - my 2 year old and baby have both just had it so I can sympathise.

When we had to do it, we used a beanbag. Laid toddler on and straddled arms with my legs. This is a safe technique used in safety restraint teaching and protects the neck. Coupled with a chocolate button afterwards!

They don't need to have their eye open. If you put the drop in the inside corner when they open their eyes it will spread across the eye as they blink, if that makes sense.

Thanks all. Jules125, how long should it take to get better on it's own?
I'm pleased to hear that the drops should spread across his eye when he opens it. Wish I had a bean bag now!

If they're antibiotic drops and you've started the course please do finish the course.

For future info you can get ointment which is a bit easier.
