My DS is 5 weeks tomorrow and is ebf. He often gets niggley when he needs a poo but tonight he is really distressed. It's not constipation as the poo is soft and runny when it comes out but he just seems to struggle to actually go. He's been screaming for a couple of hours on and off now and I'm sure that's what it is - legs keep going out straight which is what he does when he poos. Please please can anyone help with a quick solution?

Whenever my DS struggled we would try 'bicycle legs' (moving his legs as if he's on a bike) and a tummy massage. There are some good videos on YouTube which will show you how to do it. Hope this helps.

Think in same situation i would go to gp, out of hours if you are worried this weekend, but things i have heard which might help include cycling their legs like they are riding a bike. From a baby calming point of view you could try lying him on his tummy over your thighs.you might have heard people suggesting holding baby over your forearm with head resting on your hand seems to be comfortable when their tummies are sore.

A little brown sugar in teaspoon or vit more water (boiled, cooled) often works.

Poor baba, my son started to do this and I really thought at first he was struggling to go as he seemed to strain, it was actually because he was suffering from silent reflux. He would stretch his legs out and arch his back screaming. Worth considering especially if his poo is coming out soft and runny.

I had a similar problem with my dd. The hv said it was actually because she was trying not to poo - apparently often the don't like the sensation. She said the bicycle legs thing, and also to hold her legs as you would if changing the nappy, because then they can't hold it in so much.

She also had reflux, though, it turned out (although it wasn't the silent type - she was constantly sick) so it may have been to do with that too.

Hope your little chap feels more comfortable soon.

Cycling legs has worked wonders for my dd when she's been bunged up - the health visitor also said to give cooled boiled water to drink if that didn't work but we didn't need to

I'm now totally paranoid about silent reflux (he's never sick) as he has a few of the other symptoms too. Tried massage, cycling etc but nothing. He's just sucking on me for comfort which is crucifying my nipples but if I unlatch him he screams Sad

My wee man was like this!
Try the cooled boiled water whilst you sit him in a 'toilet' position (sutting with bum sort of lower inbetween your legs) or try 'tiger in tree' position in your arms. If that fails, swaddle! Worked a treat for my baby. He wasn't constipated either, just got SUPER distressed with wind/poo. Still does, actually!

A dummy really helped my refluxy, colicy DS.

He dropped it at 12 months overnight with no fuss.

Might save your nipples!!

Try massaging the base of his spine in a circular motion. Works like magic!

Thanks everyone. Still no poo and he's been a little better today and slept a lot so who knows what it is! Maybe just a growth spurt I suppose? It's such a guessing game!
