Hi, DD is 16m and she has been diagnosed with tonsillitis so has antibiotics. She has been asleep on and off all day, but I put her down for a nap at 1.30 and she is still asleep now.

I have been checking on her, but should I wake her? I want her to take her next does of medicine and also i want her to wake before bedtime IYSWIM? But she is really poorly, high temp, lethargy and Dr said let her rest try and get fluids into her.

WWYD?

Wake her for meds and a drink and then let her rest/sleep as she needs

CinnabarRed · 13/03/2013 15:49

Yes, wake her and give her her meds. If she's 'just' ordinarily poorly then she'll go back to sleep if that's what her body needs.

If you can't rouse her, dial 999

MerryMingeWhingesAgain · 13/03/2013 15:50

Can you rouse her - does she shuffle and react if you try to wake her gently? If yes, I would let her have another half hour or so, but if not - try to wake her properly, get her medicines in, and ring the GP if she is getting worse or can't drink.

Thank you, going to rouse her now, thanks !

Agree with other posters. Get meds and some fluid into her. Let her sleep though if she wants to. When they're ill its fine forthem to sleep a lot, but not rousable is the thing you need to watch for (and making sure fluid intake is ok).

nilbyname · 13/03/2013 16:10

Ok she is awake, i managed to get meds into her, but apart from an ice lolly and 7oz of milk she is not drinking much at all.

God this is baby No2 you would think I would know what to do now. She is shivering but is rocking a temp of 39.8

Have you given her any neurofen (rather than calpol)? It'll help reduce any swelling in her throat and make it easier to swallow

dikkertjedap · 13/03/2013 16:23

We have always been told by paediatrician that it is very important that medication is given at regular intervals and that it is therefore important to wake child to give medication. This of course applies to antibiotics but also for calpol/nurofen when controlling pain and/or fever. It is important that there are constant levels of medication in the blood for it to work optimally.

Hope she is feeling a bit better. Agree with other poster that ibuprofen (eg calprofen or nurofen) may work better than calpol with tonsillitis.

Try syringing fluid into her if she won't drink
It

Ok, thanks for the advice, will wake to give her her meds, that is a good point.

She is sipping a drink now as she is seeing her big brother doing it. They are watching Cbeebies together now. God I HATE it when they are ill.

How is your DD doing today?

nilbyname · 14/03/2013 16:12

Oh that's nice of you to Ask cinn, she is unwell but better. Slept in with us last night and kept us all toasty with her high temp! But we have been dosing her up to the maximum with paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Glad to hear she's on the mend. Smile
