Eczema on vulva?

DD (18mo) has got eczema on her legs-it's been fairly recent and we've just last week got some cream from the GP. I had eczema as a child so sort of expected she might at some point, and I also have scalp psoriasis (glamorous me!) and she has cradle cap. She gets quite bad nappy rash despite regular changes etc, I think because she has quite sensitive skin.

Over the weekend she had what I thought was nappy rash right on the front of her vulva (actually I'm not sure that's the correct term, it's basically on the very front where the line is rather than underneath or around her vagina or anus). I put on some Metanium and it very quickly got a lot worse. It looks almost like a burn-like red blistering. It doesn't look like eczema, nor psoriasis, nor nappy rash... She doesn't seem bothered by it but does itch a little bit when she's having her nappy changed.

I've got an appointment with the GP for later this week but I'm nervous of making it worse by putting the wrong thing on. After the Metanium made it worse I swapped to sudocrem which doesn't seem to be having much effect either way.

Has anyone had any experience of this? Do you think it's eczema?

Sounds like it could be thrush to me. Is The red patch slightly shiny in appearance? I'd try and see the GP tomorrow. You may need some Canesten cream or similar. I am ot sure what strength they use on children. Or it could be something else but different creams could irritate it.

It is slightly shiny, yes. I've never had thrush so it didn't occur to me. Have just google imaged it...don't recommend doing that she doesn't have any white bits on it which it looks like thrush usually has? And no discharge. I can't get her to the GP till weds but think I'll avoid putting anything on it in the meantime. Thanks for your help.

I agree with Fayrazzled this sounds like thrush. If you can't see the G.P. tomorrow, is there a practise nurse who would be a ble to diagnose?
In our surgery there is a list of what all the different nurses can treat.
So ask the receptionist when you phone and say it's urgent.

Is she in disposable our cloth nappies? I know disposable have some quite potent chemicals in which sensitive skin can react to, especially since it's often warm and damp in the area.

AntoinetteCosway · 11/03/2013 22:15

Disposables. I'll phone the surgery tomorrow and beg for an appt with someone! Fingers crossed they can fit us in.

I pointed it out to her nursery's staff this morning and they didn't seem overly concerned (I guess they've seen worse!) but it looks horrible to me :(

DD had a very similar sounding rash at about the same age (as well as having eczema). I described the rash to the pharmacist (he didn't look at it) and he gave me a thrush cream without prescription which cleared it up pretty quickly.

LargeGlassofRed · 11/03/2013 22:21

Impetigo? Maybe?

AntoinetteCosway · 11/03/2013 22:26

Pretty sure it's not impetigo as I remember my brother having that.

Can you have thrush without any discharge? If I can just go to a chemist that's great but I'm a bit nervous of using something strong on her without getting it checked first.

Does everyone else have adverts for Oilatum all over the page or is it Mumsnet being spooky and basing their adverts on my posts on this page?!

Lol no mine has same advert too!
Hope it clears up soon x

AntoinetteCosway · 13/03/2013 09:44

Phew about the advert!

We've been to the GP this morning who confirmed thrush and gave us some cream-thanks all for your help :)
