Tips to help 3wo take gavisconl

My dd has what I think is reflux and has been prescribed infant gavisicon. She is ebf and won't take a bottle at all. I've been told to make it up with water and give immediately after a feed with a syringe but the amount to give seems huge (15ml according to the packet) and she won't take any of it, she just screams and it dribbles our of her mouth or she chokes on it. Her distress when I try this is worse than her distress when she vomits.

Is there a better way of doing this? Can I mix it with less water or with a bit of breast milk to give? Does or have to be made up immediately before I give it( which seems impossible as I'm feeding then if I do it just after she's often already vomitted by the time it's ready) or can I make it up before i feed her?

Sorry for the really dense questions!

Have a word with the pharmacist, they are the experts if you are unsure. Does it say anything on the patient information leaflet? Can't see anything wrong with mixing it with bm even though I'm sure the vile taste of gaviscon will overpower anything! Giving it less dilute I'm sure is ok and maybe before feeds when she is still hungry any less pukey.

My ds (also ebf) was on Gaviscon from about 10 weeks for reflux. I'd read it tastes bitter, so I would express as much as possible the night before and, just before a feed, mix the sachet/s with a small amount of breastmilk (topping up with boiled water if necessary). I used a syringe to administer it (towards the end if a feed so he wasn't ravenous but also not so full he wouldn't take it). Squirt it into the cheek, a little way back as it should bypass some of the taste buds! Also, stroking the cheek or under the chin encourages them to swallow. Hope that helps - it's a pain in the arse to do, I feel for you!

I used to squirt it in slowly at the same time as bfing in the corner of DS mouth. I feel for you too!

you can mix with breast milk

also, you can as a PP says, squirt into the pouch of her cheek - this helps her t swallow

Use as little warm water as poss (I think I managed to mix 1 secret with 2ml) and I gave it before a feed as my DD, and more recently DS, were hungry enough to swallow before realising. Within a week it became an accepted part of the feeding routine! On bad days they would happily have the gaviscon and forgoe the milk...!
I experimented and found I could mix it up an hour or two prior to needing it as it kept well in the syringe (helpful if you've got the courage to leave the house with a screaming bundle of joy!)
The instructions that go with it are awful - common sense says the feed would have been thrown back up before you've had a chance to mix up and then force down a ridiculous volume of liquid...

I had the same problem. I mixed the gaviscon in a little boiled water and stored in little sterilised pots in the fridge. Then when feeding I used a breast shell to collect the leakage from the other side and added that to the gaviscon. You defo need to give it AFTER the feed as it works by forming a raft on top of the stomach contents to stop the contents refluxing into the oesophagus.

I convinced ds to take a bottle with the gaviscon after the bf, got some funny looks when we were out going from one to the other! But it worked we never had a prob with nipple confusion. Ds was on gaviscon from 6 weeks to 7 months, no probs now.
