Posted a couple of days ago. Dc2 has a lump on neck. No illness. Went to dr who checked dc over and referred to a and e for blood test to check white blood cells.

A and e decided they think its an abscess. No blood taken. Given prescription of ab's and app to go back next week.

This was thurs pm. Fri dc had diahorrea and nappy rash. This evening vomiting.

Not ill previously at all. Ab allergic reaction or d and v bug?

Spoke to paed unit where we saw paediatrician, they say wait 24 hrs. But feel reluctant to give any more med in case that's what's making dc ill.

Wwyd?

I would do as the paed unit says.

How old is dc and has he/she ever had ab before?

MountainOrMolehill · 10/03/2013 00:09

I am not medical, so don't want to advise really, but as you have phoned the paed unit, they are the ones to listen to??

It is awhile since mine were that little, but I seem to remember that they always got some diarrhea with abs

I think you have to keep giving the ab's unfortunately. (I am a HCP.) D&V would not be considered an allergic reaction, just a v unpleasant side effect as ab's tend to upset gut flora. How old is DC? Are you managing to get liquid down him? FWIW I think a revisit to GP on Monday might be an idea, as they might still want to do bloods.

When my ds was given ab as a baby I was advised to be alert for signs of a rash as this could be an indication of an allergic response. He did develop a rash and the GP gave me an alternative antibiotic as a precaution. I don't remember him having d & v. [I always slightly thought the GP had over-reacted until a couple of years later when I discovered that my ds's grandparents are both allergic to abs, my dd turned out to be allergic to nuts and various other nephews and cousins also turned out to be allergic to various allergens. With such a strong family history of allergies, I'm glad I took the rash seriously.]

Diarrhoea is a side effect so I would continue but as soon as you can ask if it can be changed if the D&V becomes an issue.

It sounds like side effects rather than allergy, tbh.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 10/03/2013 12:32

Rash d&v can be the side effects of the antibiotics. They wipe out the good bacteria in the stomach as well as the bad and can lead to upset. Try some probiotic drinks to help replenish and just treat the ras as u would another - moisturize. Obviously if it gets worse seek advice again he may need an alternative AB.

Ds always had tummy ache and runny tummy with antibiotics, some were worse than others. He seems to have mostly grown out of that.

I was given the time scales for reaction with vomitting once by out of hours, and it was quicker than you describe. I thought dd1 might be reacting when she started vomiting, but it was just a standard bug.

The allergiv reaction to really watch for is the rash. We have severe penicillin allergy in the family, and have always been watchful in case the dc also have it. We were told any rash, and to bring them in to be checked.
