Periorbital cellulitis - come and tell me what you know

DS (16m) was diagnosed with this yesterday and is now on flucloxacillin. I googled it earlier and now wish I hadn't!

The GP didn't tell me to make a follow up apt, but from what I'm reading they definitely need to see him again. It seems a bit better today (meds started at 12 yesterday) but his eye is still pretty swollen and the other one is now very sticky too.

He hasn't got a temp but was ever so slightly warm earlier. His appetite is not great either, though he's still having his milk (bf and bottle).

Anything I need to know / look out for? I think I'm going to make a fri apt at the GP's anyway.

Thanks Smile

I'm very surprised you haven't been sent to hospital Confused

DD1 had it last year at 6 years old. She was sent straight to the hospital and was 'admitted' as an ambulatory patient for 3 days of IV antibiotics, then oral for a week. She had to go in each day for a dose, then could go home for 24 hours, but was technically still an in-patient.

She had a tiny scratch on her eye one Sunday and said 'my eye hurts'. I thought she was faking because she didn't want to go to school. The next morning she woke up with one eye very swollen and sticky, the other less so.

lougle that's what's worrying me, IV abx seemed to be the recommended treatment on stuff I read on the web Sad. If I take him back to the docs tomorrow what will they do? He's already on fluclox...

I would take him to A&E, tbh. Tell them you're not happy with the fact that it's spread. Get another opinion.

Oral abx may well not be enough.

Thanks guys. I'm now looking on the net again and it may actually be [http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1218009-overview preseptal cellulitis] that he has. The GP said that there was a risk it could spread (which I think then makes it periorbital) within the eye. I think I'll take him back tomorrow and get them to check him again.

Scary scary stuff.

My ds had periorbital cellulitis at six months old and like the pp (sorry on phone so can't check names) he was admitted and on iv antibiotics. If you're in any way worried I'd go straight to A and E. When ds was admitted they took it very seriously. Hope he's on the mend very soon.

Not sure what that is but my ds had cellulitis last year on his 4th birthday. He had been a bit off colour with a temperature for a few days but we just thought it was a bug. Then we noticed a red rash creeping down his forehead (looked a bit like sunburn) and one side of his head was bulging and his eye had started to swell and close Shock

Well I freaked out and too him straight to the walk in centre where they diagnosed cellulitis straight away and gave him two weeks of antibiotics.

We found out that he got it from picking a scab on the top of his scalp .

He didn't need to be hospitalised but it was a bugger to get rid of and we ended up going back and getting more anti bs from the doctor to shift it. Had four weeks worth in total.

Not sure if this is the sane thing as your child has though.
