Which vitamins do you give your DC(s)?

Just that really?

I have been giving DD5 Centrex for Kids as an addition to her diet hoping it would help her as she seems to catch EVERY bug/cold/virus going round.

I noticed today though that while they contain a good variety of vitamins none are 100% of the RDA.

What do you give?

No vitamins- just omega3

FireOverBabylon · 25/02/2013 14:10

The Bassetts chewy ones for 3 and over. Not the ones with added omega oil as they taste vile - I tried one when DS spat it out and found out why!

The 3+ ones come in orange or strawberry and contain (reads packet):
Vit A 100%
C 75%
D3 100%
E 83%
B6 143%

We also have some 6+ Bassetts chewy vitamins, in blueberry, which I picked up by mistake through not reading the box properly. They have:

A 100%
C 75%
D3 100%
E 83%
B2 114%
B5 100%
B6 143%
B12 40%
Folic Acid (they're for adults as well as older children) 100%

A healthy dies with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Meglet · 25/02/2013 14:18

The Wellkid chewable ones, age 4-12.

They have 100% of vit D3 and folic acid.

A - 50%
C - 50%
Iron - 50%
zinc - 75%

They eat well but I top it up with the tablets. I've taken vits for 30yrs so make sure they have them too.

But a good mix of all the other vitamins and minerals.

They don't have any Omega's in them. I buy an Omega 3,6,9 oil from sainsburys for that and add it to their food.

FireOverBabylon · 25/02/2013 14:23

Seeker, I agree with you, it's why DS doesn't need the omega ones because he will eat oily fish (smug boast). However, he's a 3 year old so will eat bugger all else, except cereal, unless the stars are in correct allignment, so he gets vitamins as well.

OhMyNoReally · 25/02/2013 14:27

Haliborange syrup with omega 3 and vitamins a,c,d,e. I think this one best value with 4 dc.

fedupwithdeployment · 25/02/2013 14:36

None. Never have done. They eat well though, and are incredibly healthy (one day off school in the last 2 years between the 2 of them).

Jenniferturkington · 25/02/2013 18:37

None. I think they'd have to be eating really poor diets before I'd supplement. They seem healthy to me.

ilovepowerhoop · 25/02/2013 18:44

its advised for all children from 6 months to 5 years to supplement with vitamins A, C and D. www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/vitamins-for-children.aspx#close - Vitamin D is especially important due to the rise in cases of rickets

OldBeanbagz · 25/02/2013 18:48

Same as seeker with large doses of fresh air & exercise.

LynetteScavo · 25/02/2013 19:48

Omega 3 - I serve up lots of oily fish because I love it myself - my DC don't seem to share my joy at being served a plate of mackerel Sad It makes a difference to DS1's behaviour.

I also give Minidex to DS2 when he's looking pale - it seems to do the job, and perks him up, but it seems difficult to find of the shelves these days.

sannaville · 26/02/2013 19:11

I give dd1 and she is never ever ill, but when she does get ill she does it in stupendous fashion :) have tried certain omegas as she has ADHD but no effect really. She has her five a day and eats a wide range of fish and meat.

Dd2 has none but is a poor eater so think will start her on a multi. But then she's never ill either!

SneezySnatcher · 26/02/2013 20:48

Just vitamin D. DD eats extremely well so most vitamins are covered by her diet, but it's recommended all children have vitamin D so she does!

butterfingerz · 27/02/2013 00:12

My dd is a good eater so I only really give her vit d, my kids are mixed race so I feel the vitamin d is important. My ds is almost 2 and he gets a multivit as he's a very picky eater and is still breastfed so I worry if he gets enough iron and suchlike.

staverton · 27/02/2013 08:51

Diet alone will not provide enough vitamin d. It might have done in cavemans day when they were outside all day with very little clothes on.
Vitamin d is looking more and more important in preventing loads of diseases- from obvious rickets to less obvious cancer and diabetes.
Google it!

Flisspaps · 27/02/2013 08:56

Abidec.

ByTheWay1 · 27/02/2013 09:29

NONE - we will probably told there is some new nasty caused by taking vit D supplements in a few years when it has become common - just like too much vit A (risks for pregnancy, BIG risk of future osteoporosis) and too much folic acid (masks B12 defiency - really important when older, causing damage to the nervous system).

My kids have always had salmon/mackerel and eggs which provide a decent dose of Vit D food wise, and play out all the time - though not for prolonged mid-day periods , as I don't want my girls continually covered in toxic chemicals that make up suncream either.

A factor 8 or above suncream inhibits more than 95% of Vit D production in the skin.
