Dental question - 5 year old needs a crown on molar tooth!

My 5 year old had to have a filling in her bottom molar tooth just before Christmas. Apparently this has now cracked and the dentist says she needs to have root canal treatment and a crown. She has a small red lump in front of the tooth which I assume is an abscess - not causing any pain though. Is a crown the only way to go? Could we just give her antibiotics and a new filling? We live in Hong Kong and I am not sure if a dentist in the UK would recommend the same treatment.

If anyone has had the same situation ( or has any advice), I would be really grateful.

Thanks

It sounds like a lot for a 5yo to have done. I'm not a dentist but I've never heard of a child having such drastic work done on a milk tooth, surely the roots would be too small for a root canal. I take it this is a milk tooth & not a very early adult molar?
I would think in the UK they would give antibiotics and possibly remove the tooth. After all she would only have a gap for a couple of years until her adult molars come through.
Do you have to pay for private treatment? Sounds like an expensive job to me! Wink

My dd just had hers removed in hospital, she cracked a tooth and had an access. Is it a baby tooth?

I have never heard of a five year old getting root canal treatment. Generally, if it cannot be fixed it is extracted, if necessary under GA.

I would get a second opinion or speak to a UK dentist,

It is a milk tooth but a molar and apparently it could stay in until she is 12. We have to pay for it- v costly!
