My DD, 16 months, is not well since last night, I think is a cold perhaps. Temperature is going up to 39.8. I am giving her Calpol and Nurofen later and it works, but just not sure how much I can give her for 24h. She had, since 3:00am, three doses of Calpol and two of Nurofen and I am dreading the night as it always gets worse at this time. Thanks

it tells you on the bottles what the doses are and how many you can give in 24 hours.

ilovepowerhoop · 23/02/2013 20:47

from googling:
Calpol 5ml dose up to 4 times in 24 hours
Nurofen 5ml up to 3 times in 24 hours

Thank you, I do not know if I have to reduce the intake, because I am giving her both. My bottle of Nurofen suggests only 2.5 ml dose for her age group, so I am giving her 2.5ml of it and 5ml of Calpol.

If you alternate between the 2 and give them 3 hours apart eg 7am paracetamol, 10am ibuprofen. 1pm paracetamol, 4pm ibuprofen etc then it's keeping it topped up to keep temperature down and you won't go over the dose per 24 hours. That's how our Gp says is best to give it.

Keep a writing pad handy make a note of when u give each one so you don't loose track and give to much. That's what I do when me ds is poorly.

ilovepowerhoop · 23/02/2013 21:52

are you using Calprofen rather than childrens nurofen as the dosages are different between the two despite them being the same strength?

Calprofen is 2.5ml which can be given 3-4 times a day

You dont need to reduce dosages when giving both medicines as they both have different active ingredients.

BeaWheesht · 23/02/2013 22:32

They don't interact so just go by bottle dosages.

However with a 16m old with that temp I'd be getting her seen tbh

Thank you all. Good to know I could give their full dosages. Three hours between is easy to remember. I will take her to be seen by Doctor if she doesn't improve by tomorrow, is the weekend and A&E is the only alternative. Hope she is better soon.
