Almost 3yo DD2 with sore red vulva and painful urination

Bit of an ongoing saga.

DD2 first complained of pain when weeing back in December - literally crying in agony. Urine dipstick showed white blood cells, protein and blood and she was treated for a UTI. After only one dose of the AB, she was 100% better and we presumed that it was working. However, about a week later, when she was retested to make sure it was clear, the dipstick was still showing WBCs etc... In the meantime the lab culture had come back clear for bacterial growth, so it would seem that she didn't have a UTI after all.

She then had another episode of painful urination a couple of weeks after that. Again, the dipstick showed WBCs and protein, but the culture was clear. This time she had a slightly sore looking vaginal area which improved with the use of barrier cream and the painful urination stopped too. At that point the GP said she thought it was some form of vaginitis and said that it's common in young girls.

Anyway, that was that.

Now, on Monday this week she got up, went to the loo and was crying in pain again. When I examined her, her vulva/vagina was very red and sore looking and she had a light discharge on her pants. I applied a barrier cream and by the following day she was weeing normally again, no pain. She had two days clear but was complaining of pain again this morning.

I took her to the GP earlier. He examined her although the soreness/redness is much improved and there wasn't much to see. Again, however, her urine sample showed white blood cells. The GP has asked me to take a fesh sample in and they will send it off to the lab for culture. He said it is unlikely to be a UTI and I agree with him.

What concerns me is why does she have WBCs in her urine without any obvious infection? Would the inflamed vulva be the cause? She is well otherwise although has had a cold recently. This was the same the first time she had these symptoms back in December.

Has anyone got any thoughts?
TIA

Thrush? Try a tiny bit of canestan cream spread really thinly on the Vulva. Won't do her any harm even if it's not that, but sounds like it could be.
