How many days of a high temp before seeing the doctor?

DS 21mo had a temp of 39.5 at Friday lunch time. Since then it has only come down when he's been dosed up with calpol or ibuprofen. Both Fri and sat nights he was very restless and had a high temp. If we stop the medicine the temp goes back up to around 39. It got down to 37 yesterday afternoon but has generally been around 37.5 with the medicine.

He has a blocked nose and he's barely eaten since Thursday. He is drinking lots of water and milk though. He seems a bit lethargic today.

Should we see the doctor tomorrow if the high temperature persists?

I would of taken dc to the hospital with a temp that.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Ds had a temp of 38.5 and turned out it was meningitis plus septicaemia.

I'd take him to the doctor today. Phone NHS direct for your nearest walk in centre.

my ds had v similar, high temp last week sat to Monday, just didn't really go down at all. i didn't take to docs but then he is 5 if it was his 16mo brother i probably would have.

We spoke to the doctor on Friday afternoon when his temp was below 38 after ibuprofen. Maybe I wasn't clear enough in what I asked the doctor, but he seemed to be saying that as long as it could be kept below 38 with medicine then not to worry too much.

He also seemed a lot brighter yesterday afternoon. I'm now thinking this is dragging on too long though.

We don't have walk in centres in Scotland. When DH gets home I'll phone NHS OOH.

I wouldn't worry too much. Treat the child, not the numbers and keep an eye on his 'lethargy'. I hope he turns the corner really soon.

It could be something as simple as tonsillitis which can cause a nasty temp.
Could you take him walk in centre?

If his temp is only controlled with medicine, then it says on the box not to give for more than a certain number of days without consulting a dr. If you are approaching that limit I would call ooh or take him to a&e if he gets more lethargic

I agree with gettingtogrips As long as he's bright in himself I would have done the same as you. Keep an eye on the lethargy though? My similarly aged DS has only a slight fever developed this afternoon but I've never seen him so lethargic and generally off colour. If he hasn't brightened up by the morning he'll be off to the doctors tomorrow. Hope your DS feels better soon.

DS had a 3 hour nap on my knee on Sunday afternoon and woke up much brighter with no temperature. His temp stayed down all night and he was on form today (but knackered this evening).

He's fine now just needs to rest a bit more. He's also eating again :)

He has had temps of over 40 before, in October when he had a very sore throat.

I think he just struggles to regulate his temperature and it goes up very high when he's ill.
